Hello

I have no clue when it comes to apple computers. My nephew has an imac (CRT) and the screen has a red haze to it. If you play with the contrast and brightness settings any area that has white will smear towards the right in a red color. I think the CRT is going to die, but apple products are different and I figured I would ask someone here first.

Any idea how I should start to troubleshoot this computer.

Thanks

Apple CRTs aren't different... and it sure sounds like it's just reached the end of its line. But try resetting the PRAM; hold down alt cmd r p while booting, right after the start-up chime. Hold it until it chimes again.

Plug an external monitor into it. There is a panel in the back that can be taken off and has a vga port. If the picture looks good on the external monitor it's the built-in screen. The screen is the single biggest poit of failure in these all-in-one macs. We've had a 29% failure rate on eMac monitors, and a 11% on eMacs so far.

turned out that he had OS X over OS 9. He did not have all the OS 9 firmware updates installed. I had to install 9 install all updates then install X and all updates. It appears to be running fine now.

Thanks for everyones help.

Your friend is quite lucky :). We've had plenty of imacs in the shop that didn't have the new firmware, and the only way to revive them is to swap out the board.

Glad to hear all is well.

even after booting with CMD+option+O+F?

9 out of 10 of the video issues on iMacs, especially the 350 and 400mhz ones are firmware.. it's a rare day when we have to replace a logic board.
The big thing is to NEVER reset PRAM when it's in that state...
Most of our customers are novice enough to not try.. sooo.. we get a lot upgraded easily by hooking up an external display and updating firmware from os 9.

Makes it really easy if you have a iPod with OS 9 loaded on it to boot from.. in case the person wiped out OS 9.
