iMac 2012 Refresh

Which credible sources have said there will be Retina iMacs and Powerbooks, like the person above me is expecting?
Here's two:

Following the appearance of a benchmark potentially signaling a near-term launch for Apple's much-rumored thinner MacBook Pro, 9to5Mac reports that it has received specific information on the new 15-inch MacBook Pro's design from a source who has handled prototype casings and other components.

...

In line with previous rumors, the machine is said to include a "Retina" display, a development that has been rumored for some time and for which evidence has been showing up in builds of OS X Lion and Mountain Lion. According to the report's source, OS X will simply offer a set of resolution quality options for the new machine ("such as big, small, or optimal") to allow users taking advantage of this new "HiDPI" support to select their desired combination of sharpness and resolution.

Bloomberg confirms a report from earlier today that Apple is preparing to release thinner MacBook Pro models with Retina displays.

The models are to be released at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11 and will also include flash memory to "cut startup times and extend battery life". The report is likely a "controlled leak", something that Apple PR has been known to do in the past to share product details.

...

Apple Inc. is preparing a new lineup of thinner MacBook laptops running on more powerful chips made by Intel Corp., people with knowledge of the plans said.

The MacBook Pro machines, to be unveiled at Apple’s annual developers conference starting June 11, also will feature high- definition screens like those on the iPhone and iPad, as well as flash memory to cut startup times and extend battery life, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been made public.

By themselves they're solid rumours, but the fact that the second confirms the first means it's very likely to be legit.

By themselves and together they are rumors.

Bloomberg has more credibility but note how they say it:

"Apple Said to..."

Sounds more like they are relaying hearsay.

Bloomberg has more credibility but note how they say it:
It's not that simple. They're both rumours, but both have credibility, decent if not good track records, and are reporting that they've been told this information by their sources. That's enough to believe these rumours are accurate. However there is a third report from ABC, saying that their sources say that the MacBook Pro's and the iMac's will be getting retina displays.

So that's three. On top of all that, we know that Apple's been including more and more support in Lion for Hi-DPI displays, and even more so in Mountain Lion, and we know that Sharp currently has been and is producing very high resolution panels.

You just have to put the pieces together to figure out what Apple's doing. You can make very accurate predictions if you know which rumours to believe, which to not believe.

I don't see where they said that?

Neither Bloomberg, Nor 9to5Mac say their source heard anything about iMacs so it isn't three sources for iMacs, just ABC, and there is nothing that says Bloomber/9to5 don't have the same source.

And here is the what ABC says at the end of their story(the only one making iMac retina claims):
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2012/05/thinner-apple-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-coming/
"Of course everything is just hearsay until Apple pulls the curtain off its new products."

Also ABC, is their Tech blog, and the reporter is Joanna Stern formerly of Engadget, likely with same dubious sources she had when at Engadget.

You mean like the iPhone 5 with big screen that was coming out last year? 9to5 mac had about 4 rumors on big screen iPhone 5.

I don't see where they said that?

The first words of the title of their article.

I am not saying their won't be Retina displays on something. I just think it is ridiculous to get your expectations up over rumors.

I wasn't saying there was three for the iMac, just three for the MacBook Pro. And it's true, there's nothing to say they don't have the same source, but the info isn't identical.

That's correct, it is hearsay. They've been told that by their sources, but we've no way to verify that, and nor do they. But really it's like the Autobots, you've got lots of different Autobots, like Prime, and Honeybee, and whoever else, and their just a single autobot by themselves, but put them together and you get a big autobot! Just like with this. (That's a joke btw.)

Eh, perhaps.

If I remember correctly, I put that one in the "false" box. I could cite many rumours that haven't been accurate, but if you only take the credible ones, and the ones with multiple sources, combined with other information, you get pretty accurate results.
I am not saying their won't be Retina displays on something. I just think it is ridiculous to get your expectations up over rumors.
I don't say this to brag, but I'm often right -- more so than not, as are other members who use similar methods. Sometimes you can never be sure as there's not enough rumours about it going around, but when there's lots of them and that information is by credible sources, and particularly when there's additional information available, you can assume it is true pretty safely.

The person I first replied to. Was expecting: At least Retina Macbooks and Retina iMacs.

My whole point it about building expectations based merely on rumors. There is nearly nothing on Retina iMacs, even if you count strength in numbers of rumors.

It is irrelevant if you got that particular one right or not. This was one of the heaviest floated and most believed Apple rumors in years. Even the case makers were designing new cases for the new design iPhone 5 that never was. There was massive moans of disappointment when the big screen iPhone 5 didn't materialize last year.

If anyone is moaning next week that there wasn't a Retina iMac at WWDC, that they were expecting because of rumors, they are an idiot.

There's nothing wrong with that though. I'm convinced at this point that the MacBook Pro will have a retina display, and I believe it to be true of the iMac as well, though I'm not as sure. Since there's several rumours about the MacBook Pro getting the retina display, I consider one enough for the iMac since the rumour is similar and even more so because it's from a source which also said the MacBook Pro is rumoured to get the retina display.

I got it right though because I don't just believe every rumour that comes through the mill, I weigh them and assess them to determine their validity, which is possible though far from everyone does that.

I'll be disappointed but not surprised. Particularly because I intend to buy one :D

Well, store.apple.com is down, so we're probably going to see something new today. :D

I'm not sure I need it, but that Retina MBP is very, very, very tempting.

It is sick, but to get the config I'd like it's 3k (ouch, but totally worth it if you have the cash.) I think the best upgrade from a cost perspective is the new 11" MBA. Now it has an 8GB of ram option and a faster video card/processor. A config of that I liked was around $1.3k. Plenty of speed for me (since I do all my power lifting on the iMac,) the 128GB HD is once again fine since during travel I use external HD's, and it has an awesome size.

The default $2200 option is perfect for me, though I admit I'd like to upgrade the SSD capacity since I have a large ALAC iTunes library. Then again, I'm sure that library needs pruning anyway...

Look at your post #44 above. Look at my quote you included in your reply. I specifically state iMacs and Macbooks. Also look at the title of this thread.

That is a pretty ridiculous house of cards, considering one dubious rumor enough on the iMac side, because the dubious rumor source also included the Macbook rumor. A dubious source of rumors is going to have weaker filters and include everything and the kitchen sink. They don't gain credibility by including info from more credible sites.

It also appears they were wrong.

I was close to pulling the trigger on the default $2200 option until I read that the SSD and RAM both aren't user upgradeable at this time. The memory will never be since it is soldered to the board now so what you build to order is what you've got. So if I do decide to go with a MBPR I'll probably be looking at a $2999 build now so that I can get everything I want.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for upgradeable RAM to 32 at some point, but I 16 will be cool for now. I kind of wanted a couple of VMs running at once.

The default option is pretty nice, not going to lie. But with the inability to really upgrade the HD and the RAM it's tough to swallow.

My philosophy when buying a Mac was usually to max everything that isn't user upgradeable and upgrade everything else myself. With soldered in Ram and an SSD stick, that isn't exactly possible however. If you don't want more Ram or anything larger than 256GB then it is indeed more than sufficient.
I unfortunately have a problem in my head that regrets non-maxed out purchases, as if I got something "sub-par". Thankfully I only have this problem with buying Mac's, and not something more expensive like "cars."

I don't think 256 GB of storage space isn't enough. For my uses, it'll be just enough, and it certainly will be plenty to the average joe I wind up selling the laptop to in two years.

I wasn't saying you didn't say that, just that I didn't notice it and wasn't talking about the iMac.

It's not really. I know "retina" is the direction Apple is going, and there's strong rumours for a retina display on the MacBook Pro, and one rumour for the iMac is good enough for me to think that it's going to happen though I'm certainly not as sure as I was with the MacBook Pro.

It still will happen for the iMac though, just in the next month or two. Mark my words! :D

Again. Context.

The person that brought me into the discussion was expecting a Retina iMac at WWDC because of rumors.

I was cautioning against using rumors to set expectations, because they are most often wrong.

There was no Retina, iMac at WWDC, thus a let down for anyone basing expectations of such on rumor.

Apple is obviously going in the direction of a Retina iMac. I said as much months ago in another thread. But an obvious trend is not a credible rumor. So far there have been zero credible rumors about retina iMacs.

I agree that the iMac refresh probably won't have a retina display. I recently read a post at AppleInsider that says retina displays will probably be next year. It is definitely the direction they are going, just not yet.
