I'm Torn. Q6600, E6850 or E6750

Trying to Decide between these 3 and if the first 2 are worth the extra $80 or not. I'm upgrading from a AMD x64 3000+ with 1GB of Ram. I don't play a lot of games, but there are a few that I do plan on playing other than my current fave Call of Duty 2, such as Stalker CD4, HL2, basically FPS games. I do a lot of DVD Ripping, 4-5 Firefox windows each with 10+ Tabs, Tons of Music and what not. Some Photoshopping. What would ya'll recommend?
This is the Hardware I already have or will be getting:
Antec P180B Case
Thermaltake Toughpower 750w Modular PSU
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
eVGA 8800GTS 320MB
4GB OCZ Platinum Edition DDR2 800 Dual Channel CL 4-4-4-15
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R P35 MB.

If you are recommending the Q6600 would the G0 hit 3.0GHZ stable and maintain relatively low heat with my AC 7 Cpu Cooler?

I'd suggest the quad (the games you list probably won't see much of a difference, but your ripping/editing will). The Q6600 shouldn't have an issue with hitting a stable 3.0 no matter what stepping it has. It's a medium overclock from what I've seen.

if ur overclocking E6750 or E6850 depending on ur budget.

Q6600 is basically useless unless you encode rip decode etc etc/

Motherboard. depends on ur budget. Abit ip35 pro / Asus p5kdeluxe / asus p5k

are all descent priced boards. the gig p35dq6 is overpriced for what? better caps? rofl

Sales are always going on for ram. thats bout it chum :)

I already have Picked my MB out, and if I do overclock it would be very minimal, never have had a huge desire to overclock but would want to get a good bang for the buck off the CPU cooler/air solution I have.

I went over these three chips in my mind recently too.

Originally I wanted to get the Q6600. But then I became concerned about the heat issues. The uncertainty if I'd get a G0 stepping. And finally if it'd even do me much good at all this year. I doubted it would overclock as far as a dual core, due to the heat.

So then I moved over to the E6850. Having a chip doing 3GHz before I even went into the BIOS sounds nice. This will surely overclock much further than the quad core, so will be an immediate benefit to my gaming.

But finally I settled on the E6750. I saw no reason to pay $80 for 333MHz more, though the $20 for the 333MHz over the E6550 seemed fair enough. And these things overclock so easily that I'll probably get near the overclock I would have with the E6850 anyway. Seems like the best bang for the buck.

By the time quad cores become viable, there will surely be something better and cheaper available anyway. Not to mention, I kinda would like to see how AMD's Phenom X4 turns out too before getting a quad core.

If the OP was just a gamer I'd say get the most dual core he could afford but since he's doing a lot of multitasking and photo editing I'd say get the quadcore.

just get the E6850 if you dont plan on doing much overclocking.

3ghz stock, bump the vcore up a tad and imm sure 3.5 will be a breeze :p expecially with stock / air cooling solutions.

I went the E6850 route since quad would be pointless at this time for my personal uses

Yea, but I am thinking I could get 3.0ghz out of the quad on Air if I get the G0 stepping, which if this is the Case I'd be fine with. I think it's really between the Q6600 and the E6750 at this point. I could get the 6750 to 3.0ghz off air as well and it'd be $80 or so cheaper than the 6850.

I sprung for the Q6600. 6mb more of L2 cache and 2 more cores....how could I say no for only $300?
I'm too much of an enthusiast to settle for 2 cores when I can get 4 for so little.

Haha I agree it's a complete coin flip. Personally I'm going with the 6850 for current games.

yes you can get the quad upto 3 ghz. thats no doubt. but the E6850 gets 4ghz on air.

And appears to be a good spot for that cpu..

I went to the E6850, if it doesnt perform the way I want it too, I can simply buy a quad.

Money made is money to spend.. :)

The Million Dollar Question: Dual or Quad Core for the Same Price?
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3038&p=8

The problem is that the major question for gaming performance is whether or not upcoming games (by the end of this year) will really be able to benefit from quad core over dual. It's a rather uncertain time due to the questions of multithread gaming performance. Nobody wants to buy an E6850 right now because it kicks ass in current games just to find out in a month that Crysis gets a huge boost from quad over dual core processors.

I'd agree with you regarding the E6850 specifically, but if you're saying that everyone would rather spend $275 on a Q6600 now then I would disagree.

If Crysis gets a huge boost from quad, then gamers can sell their dual core chips and buy a quad. You can spend $190 now for great OC'ing and great performance with an E6750, and in 6 months you can sell the E6750 and get a Q6600 (or better) for less than you'd pay now. I don't see what's so terrible about that.

In general, I've found that money spent trying to 'future proof' your rig is money wasted. In the long run, you'll get better performance for less money if you focus on buying equipment that will perform best for what you do RIGHT NOW. Sell and upgrade as needed.

I'm curious why people over clock there Q6600? Will putting it up to 3Gz mean an extra 5 fps in first person shooters? or will it give you an extra 20fps?...Does it really make that big a difference?

A Q6600 OC'd to 3ghz puts you at the clockspeed of a 6850 with 2 more cores. There should be a moderate increase in performance but it really depends what apps you're running. For games I think it'd be worth it.

but a e6850 overclocked to 3.8 / 4ghz owns your 3.2ghz quad for games AS of now.

Quad core is technically useless for todays games people. everyone knows that.

Yes Crysis will benefit from it, upcoming games in 08 will benefit from it but why buy a quad now?? when q1 08 you got penryn coming out. 12 mb cache = Better for crysis and all your fancy lil games that perform off more cores.

Yes e6850 / Q6600 are techincally the same price. Its a toss up. the question is, what do you use ur computer for? and how will it benefit.

I chose E6850 to get a higher clock for the games I play they wont benefit off more cores. I dont multi task, i dont encode, i dont rip, i dont need a quad core.

If needed I can hold out until Penryn. Quad core at this time is a big waste IMO IMO IMO.

Well most games...the Q6600 beats E6850 in Lost Planet, not to mention it almost catches it in Supreme Commander (not bad considering it's 600 MHz slower). While the Q6600 generally doesn't do as well as the E6850 in games, one could say the Q6600 gets close enough in newer games (and in old games there isn't a "real world" difference between ~120 fps and ~140 fps).

Quad core at this time is a big waste IMO IMO IMO.

There are those who might say that's quite the assumption.

Right now, the quad core is a waste. Since you do all that coding stuff, you WILL want the quad, not the 6750 n 6850. Get the 67,68 if you game.
