Ok i got a PNY 6800 GT which im too afraid to overclock too much. and i hear stuff like ocing decreases the life of the card which is true but at what point(for my card)

coolbits detected 415/1.13
all i want it to do is 400/1.1 :cool:

if i make it below the detected amount will the life of the card still decrease or will it ONLY decrease when you see artifacting? how can i make SURE the card will be just as safe as a stock one at 400/1.1

sorry had to say that i feel better now if you are scared to OC then don't OC nobody can say exactly how much if any it's going to affect the card if you are that worried about it then don't do it :rolleyes:
 
OK, now that the chumpd*cks have replied and tried to make you feel like sh*t, I'll answer your question. Anytime you overcklock you run the risk of decreasing the life of your card. That's just how it is, you are running a part out of it's spec. I don't know how much you decrease the life of your card, chances are, if you are not aggressivly overclocking you should be fine. I also have a PNY 6800GT and I run it at 400/1.1 and I have not had any problems. The way I see it, the GT is just an underclocked Ultra. Running the card at Ultra speeds should not add to much wear and tear on the card. If you want you could add better cooling (maybe water cooling) which should counteract the increased heat caused by the overclock. Hope this helps.

The GT isn't an underclocked ULTRA, ultras have a slightly better architecture. They are made to run better at higher clocks, on one of the other posts they showed... say one simple thing is that the GT has less mosfets than the Ultra, I'm sure there are other differences.

I bought a $450 videocard and immediately voided the warranty. I flashed it, increased the core and memory voltage above stock, overclocked it, and bolted on a new giant heatsink so I could overclock even more. Am I scared that I'll break it? A little, but them's the breaks. I am by no means rich and I couldn't possibly replace it any time soon if it went poof, but I do have a bit of experience with this sort of thing.

Now, should you be afraid of ruining your new videocard by overclocking a little? Absolutely not. The Nvidia drivers set the recommended speed well below what the card can really handle, so setting it to that speed or faster isn't going to cause a meltdown. It may increase the core temp by a few degrees, but unless you see artifacts, there's absolutely nothing to worry about. Even if you do overclock and it causes the card to go bad even at stock, it's a defect in the card itself and you can RMA it without trouble (unless you tell them you overclocked it, which I'd avoid). The worst thing that would happen 99% of the time is cause artifacts at overclocked speeds, which you could fix by setting back to stock.
 
I personally think water cooling is not the way to go. Electronics and water don't mix.

Also you don't know what your doing to that GPU or CPU that your cooling. Putting hot than cold makes electronics act weird or anything for that matter. In the end you could get a card that acts really weird. I've seen it happen. Never on air. Either it fails or it goes forever.

And all those peeps who say otherwise that is fine. Just don't sell me your water cooled GPU or CPU to me. ;)

Just go get a VGA silencer or a socket A sink and epoxy it on to the card if your planning to overclock in long term.

The card may have a better architechture, but the core and the ram are just underclocked versions of the Ultra. Since about 90% of the GT owners out there are getting succesful Ultra overclocks it looks as though Nvidia was playing it cautious when designing the Ultra.

Water cooling obviouly works. Watercooling kits are becomming main stream, homemade kits are all the rage. How many water cooling disasters (not caused by stupidity) has anyone heard of.

Home PCs are not the first to be overclocked. The military cools many Cpu's with water,
some are even completly immersed in non-conductive liquids.

It is very ignorant to spew such a general and non-informed opinion.

You really haven't done anything with water have you, I've been around here for years and water cooling is by far the best way to cool any thing. Why? It keeps everything the coolest it possibly can be without having to use unreliable cooling such as petliers or phase changing nor using noisy fans on large obstructive HS's, you can have a completely silent water cooling kit without fans and it'll do just as well with a larger radiator than one with fans. Water is the next generation of cooling. Sure some people can't handle watercooling, they fiddle with it while the computer's on and cause a massive electrical surge and it fucks everything up.

People who aren't retards can do water cooling just fine.

And just because someone's cpu or gpu failed who used water doesn't mean anything about the type of coolin it used. It failed because they OCed. Failure from OCing improperly is normal.

Where do yo uget the half assed idea that water cooling pumps warm water onto stuff... see this is the illogical bull shit people spew. Not only does water cooling NOT EVER put warm water on the cpu but it puts cooled water that was run through a radiator, cooled to damn near room temperature (best you can do without other types of cooling involved) and then run over the cpu/gpu. Alot better than air cooling.

It goes like this... Ussually... The water starts being pumped from the reservoir (where the excess water is kept), into the radiator (takes the heat out of the water, like a car's radiator), the water then goes through the lines to the cpu/gpu, it runs over the surface of the inside of the water block, taking ALOT of heat with it back out to the reserviour, then it starts again, into the radiator losing its heat, the ROOM TEMP water is then pumped onto the cpu and then into the reserviour again. NOT a hard concept to understand that water cooling is MUCH better than air since air cooling can't get a cpu to room temps, water cooling with a good radiator CAN.

Don't spew non-sense.

There was no use in explaining that man, he doesn't get it. It's the way car cooling works, except that has to be a certain temp. He doesn't know shit about so he tries to talk shit about it, just let him be with his HSF for life. Ignorance is all that comes to mind.

Sometimes I wonder why in the fuck anyone bothers to ask questions when all they get are insults and smartassed bullshit for their troubles. Great way to make people feel welcome.

If you want to OC do it smart. There are many apps out there that let you test for your max levels in a much safer manner than the "just do it trial and error till it almost breaks" advice that so many seem to favor. Get an improved cooling solution. Above all read up, and ask alot of questions, get answers from people who honestly want to help and not from shit heads that get their jollies taking pot shots at people.

Tony123 do not be afraid young grasshopper, OvClk till the cows come home!
With the way the drivers are setup if you go to high your wings won't melt, the card will just slow itself down or you will see some funky stuff. The worst that could happen is that you will need to reinstall the drivers.
That being said.......
Remember that a good cooling solution is mans best friend (not some dog)
To be able to suck as much life outta your card you need coolin!
If the card runs to hot you'll start to see weirdness on the screen, if that happens just back off on the Ovclk!
As far as reducing the life of the card, yes it will, but I have yet to have a card die or fry or say goodbye. I end up buying a new one before that!
Besides, what better reason to buy an SLI Ultra :D

This is my philosophy in over clocking. Don't overclock unless you have the money to replace the damaged component. I spent close to $1500 this summer for my rig. Everything is running fast and smooth. I have no need to over clock anything on this rig to get any MAJOR performance increase. At this moment I am video card limited. The 6800 Ultra runs circles around my 9800 XT with a similar setup. But I am trying to find an X800 XT PE/6800 Ultra for $499. But that's not going to happen anytime soon :p The only place I can find a $499 video card is at outpost :p I already pre-ordered my card and will wait the month or so to save the extra $100+ overcharge :p

But if you got money to burn go right ahead and overclock in slow increments. I over clocked my pentium 166 back in the days :p It's still working fine to this day :)

The cpu acts weird. It gets high spikes. Meaning the cpu gets stuck for a while in use and than low cpu spikes. I had to toss the CPU because it was acting eratic. It was on p4 1.6 and after that I just stay away from peltiers and water.

Just an experience nothing more. Why is this a flame bait? LOL I'm just telling you my experience. Don't get you panties all tighten up just because I said water. My opinion. You have yours.

Well, nothing wrong with minor overclocking with a stock cooler, but if you really wanna ramp up those mhz then get a good aftermarket cooler! Read up and educate yourself as much as you can so incase you do see something happening, you will know how to handle it. Just overclock some, then run 3DMark03 and 05. Those will show you some quick artifacting around the troll levels. Then play some Doom 3 or other intense game and see if you can notice any snow like distortion or tearing in the textures. if you do, back down your overclock alittle bit until your stable. overclock in 5mhz increments at the beginning, then 1mhz when you get closer to your max OC. Then you just have to play around until you find your sweet spot. And like someone else said, it's hard to kill your card just by overclocking. You need to have crappy cooling or overvolt your AGP via BIOS but other than that, its pretty hard. Good luck on your adventure!
