Honestly, I can say Im worried that ATIs new cards wont be better/as good as there Nvidia counterparts. Ive grown to love ATI... I liked Nvidia when there was the TI4600 (although I had always wanted an 8500 because I wanted something different). I just dont want ATI to go down because of a bad product, I feel Nvidia could take alot more hits then ATI due to there long-running dominance and hand in "other" parts of the PC. They have deals with companies like Dell.

I so want 3dfx to be resurrected... theres got to be an indian dance in there somewhere that will bring them back.
 
Don't worry this is good competitive business :) I personally would like to see Matrox get back into the scheme of things. I went from 8mb nvidia, Matrox G400 Max (Probably my favorite), voodoo 5 5500, Geforce 3 Ti, then to the Geforce 4 Ti4800. I don't know what my next card will be but I am sure excited about the 512mb cards to come :)
 
Ati arent in any trouble at all. Even if their next series is a blunder their low end cards are good enough to keep them afloat. And thats where the money is anyways.

I think s3 is working on delta chrome. I think that was delayed a bit. (im talking about the suppossedly high end part, maybe it was vaporware?) Sis has the xabre, and while it cant compete with the x800/6800 it could still compete in the mid range market with some effort. . And matrox has been very quiet for a long time, im hoping to see something new from them.
 
ATi has been in buisiness a good bit longer than Nvidia and they did not even get into the battle for the fastest untill a few years ago. They were happy with there low end/oem parts for quite some time. Even if they were to flop on this generation of cards it would not hurt them to badly.
 
Originally i was thinking they got into the accelerator business because they saw eventually accelerators completely replacing regular video cards. Which they nearly have. There arent to many pcs sold now that dont come with some form of acceleration, even if its sis.

I havent been able to skip a generation yet I almost did with my ti4600 until it died that was the 2nd time it did. They sent me a 5900xt sold it for 200 and bought a 9800pro I tested both and the ati had much better quality in games to me

my bet is that ATI did not start from scratch on the r420 and it will be there "FX" serires and the NV40 is another "9700pro"
 
AFAIC, matrox can take their overpriced, underperforming horseshit and shove it. I would dearly love to see 3dfx "lazarus'ed". I never loved them, my first 3d vid-card was a TNT2. But I'm nostalgic for the days of good vidcards and no bullshit. When you knew that a TNT2 Ultra was better than a Voodoo2 SLI setup or a Voodoo3, why, because the fucking framerate said so.

Nowadays we have all this "SE-this" and "XT-that" and "Pro/NonPro-another" and pixel shader versions and all that fucking crap. When a next-gen part is slower than the previous gen part (Like 9200 vs 8500, or GF2 GTS vs GF4 MX 400), or a Radeon 7000 or VE that DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TnL! It's all bullshit meant to obfuscate and rip off the consumer.

Hmm... might want to look over your facts 1 more time. I admit, I'm an ATI fanboy but Nvidia did a VERY good job with the 6800 Ultra. 2 and sometimes 3 time the performance of a 9800xt is nothing to scoff at.
 
Agreed, the GF6800 Ultra is an impressive piece of kit. The r420 will have to be something really special if ATi wants to rule the roost once more.
 
The graphics business is a tough one, and ATi could actually really suffer if the R420 doesn't live up to its name. Why? Because although the real money is in the business-level sales, people are not going to buy cards from a company that is "second-best" at the high-end bracket. That's why ATi's low-end sales have skyrocketed ever since they've had the best high-end cards.

If they're stomped out by the GeForce 6800, then businesses will start turning to nVidia again for their solutions.

Also, nVidia is sitting on a much larger pile of money than ATi . . . if they get knocked off the hill (oh wait, they already were) it's much easier for them to climb back up (maybe they already have) because of all their assets. If ATi comes out with a product line that's less powerful than nVidia's, they might have a tough time reclaiming the crown.

Also, we shouldn't rule out XGI, although at this point they still suck.

ATI seem to be entering the new generation of video cards in a better financial position (IMO)

ATI are releasing their mid-range and value cards earlier on than NVidia, meaning they dont have extra stock.
NVidia is offering a discount on millions of GPU's which may become scrap or have to be sold at a loss:

If ATI's offering isnt as strong as NVidia's all that means is they will lower their prices ;) (they will still be making profit!)

AND except for a few specs we don't know ANYTHING about the ATI card. ATI is a big company, they wipe their own asses, they know how to run a business and put out a product.
 
as long as i get the right specs when it comes out (may 4 right?) then i will be satisfied as you wont be able to get it by then and I dont think that the 6800ultra will be in stores by may 4. Anyway there has been a history of companies releasing specs too early and then having to change them which can really damage their reputation.

I have no "worries" ATI will be the faster chip. I have "worries" in that PS3.0 will really catch on. I could honestly care less though - im going with whatever is best for $300.
 
Honestly things look good for ATi this generation, Nv40 is only 400mhz and the ATi 16 pipe card is scheduled to be 600mhz!!!
Ps3.0 is very useful but with a bit more work Ps2.0 can do all the effects Ps3.0 can so its not that much of a big deal.

PS 2.0 is only now starting to show up with any kind of magnitude. PS 3.0 becoming mainstream is probably quite a way off. By then there will be better PS 3.0 cards than NV40.
