Consoles seems to be taking over the gaming scene. Seeing the recent released of Halo 2, it has become apparent that Xbox and PS2 are more popular than PC gaming. Not only the fact that Halo 2 sold $125 million worth in the first day, but also all of the news coverage surrounding it. Halo 2 was all across not only the local news, but CNN, ABC, FOX, and NBC. I didn't realize it was such a big deal. (Didn't like Halo for the PC.) I just went to Electronic Boutique last night to buy NFSU2 and all the PC games were stuffed in the far corner, and Xbox and PS2 games dominated the shelves. This is certianly a frightening thing for a guy like me, who has his PC and no consoles. With Half Life 2 on the horizon, I'm curious to see what sales are going to be like, steam included, and how much media will be covering "the most important game you will ever play" (PC Gamer). I am constantly getting into Console vs. PC debates with kids at my school, and its rare to find another kid who plays computer games. I think its a shame that consoles are stealing the spotlight from the PC, and I hope things dont keep going downhill.

Yeah the problem with that though for me anyways is that the console games can never change. Like Half life you know how many mods for that their are. Then you look at rainbow six3 and stuff and they don't have hardly any mods for them. I don't know it just seems that you get more out of a pc game then you do a console game.

yeah unless major content dilvery comes out for consoles they will always be one step behind the PC IMO. Also developers are the only ones that are going to put out new content for a game and they are going to charge for it, whereas the mod community for the PC isnt gonna charge a dime. I mean look how long HL1 lasted. The damn game is 5 years old and still going strong because of the mod community. Also consoles are more atainable than PC's because of the entry costs versus a PC. You can get an Xbox for 149.99 where that will only get you a mobo for a PC. I personally have both consoles and a PC. I have all 3 consoles and a PC. There are always games that come on out a specific system that will not on other systems. And I dont really think HL2 will get the media coverage like Halo 2. Also remember who was behind the advertising for Halo 2 (insert Microsoft). Half-Life 2 will be huge no doubt, but who knows if it will show up on CNN or whatnot. I dont think consoles will ever replace the desktop PC, at least not anytime soon. Although the console companies are moving to a more total integration with the newer consoles. In the end though I think its just the price of admission for consoles that looks so appealing to the general public. I dont think mommy and daddy are gonna plop down 1500 bux for a great gaming PC for little Johnny but they will plunk down 149.99 for the consoles that are out.

Well keep in mind that consoles only have one main purpose, that is gaming. PC's have multifuctions like gaming, surfing, typing, programming, etc. Not everyone can afford something that can play doom3, but most people can afford a $150 console and $50 game.....But when Halo 2 comes out for the PC, it is going to be sweet. Graphics on the PC are far superior to the console....

When Halo 1 came out for PC I went out and bought a copy...and it had less features than the XBox version...and it was a resource pig to boot. It was little more than a port...poorly done. I sold it soon after. The graphics were ok, but nothing amazing.

They dont release the PC versions for a year later because then they wouldn't sell any consoles...Same with GTA:SA. Try as they might, I will not go out and by a PS/2...ill wait.

FPS games on consoles suck... I'm sorry, but the aiming is way less accurate, and it just sucks in general.

PC is the only way to go for FPS shooters. Consoles are ultimately the best for just getting together with a few friends, and playing games as everyone doesn't need a computer to play, just a controller.

I doubt consoles will ever match computers without becoming computers.

You do realize that in a few years "consoles" will be nothing more than PC's, right?
The console as we knew it is dead. Gone. History.

All the consoles are doing now is modifying PC parts to shove in them. HTPCs and consoles will blend together within the next 5 years. You won't be able to distiguish them.

/random theory. ;)

Yea... Consoles are more popular in my oppinion... I know far more people who play games on consoles than on PCs.

The biggest reason is that they can't afford the upgrade cycle you have to go through with a PC and they like the simplicity, just pop the game in and BAM! it works. In many cases on PCs you have to mess with drivers, you could get a virus/spyware which can mess up the games etc. etc.

Just because something is the best doesn't make it the most popular. In my oppinion the PC destroys any console in FPS games (and with the right addons, almost any other game you can think of).

As for the comment about consoles never being as good as PCs before they become pcs... Somehow I think we're already walking that fine line. I mean the XBOX is essentially a PC.

I think that the console is more popular simply because of price and maintenence. Not only is the XBOX only $150, but as stated above, theres no installing, no drivers, no patches, and no potential problems. Your XBOX is either broken or its not, you cant try reinstalling DirectX :p
Its obvious to anyone whos played FPS on both systems that the PC is a much better experience. I have friends that play Halo for XBOX and say that they can aim and move just as well as they can on the PC. They're idiots! I really, really wish that XBOX Live would interact with computer players, that way I can connect to XBOX live games and rape everyone. The FPS does not belong attatched to a controller, it belongs to a mouse, period.
And, I think you're right about consoles becoming computers. Once XBOX2 rolls around, people will probably be building their own lol. Imagine that.

consoles have a few things going for it, being why they're so popular:

1. ease of use.
2. cost.
3. longevity.
4. hard to pirate, (but that can be side-stepped, given the proper amount of attention.)

about it, ya don't have to upgrade your Xbox (not counting modding) to play halo2. it's a three year old system now, can three year old PCs play doom 3 at high settings? and now that xboxs (and ps2 and gamecubes) have lowered to the one hundreds, that further increases their base. hell, there's stll a few playstation one games coming out. so basically, a one time cost of, let's say 400 dollars for the Xbox2, will last (two years (conservatively speaking), my 310 dollar 9800pro barely lasted 10 months. plus, the console graphics can look better (relatively) than a PC, but that's only because the console game makers know the configurations, and don't have to bother with "minimum" specs. can you imagine if bungie, id, valve, or epic could pump out if the PC market said to em "you make a game, everybody will have a 2.2ghz with a gig of RAM and an x800/6800 (gotta even be Politically Correct now with the stupid video card flamewares)"

everything else is eclipsed by the PC. strategy, and FPS games blow on the console (although the keyboard/mouse adapter does intrigue me), and you can buy controllers for sports and racing games. plus, with multiple USB inputs, all it takes then is games supporting more than one player.

but look at where the console is headed, harddrives, dvd-roms, component out video, surround sound. essentially a PC. it looks more like Consoles, PCs, and DVRs, and Media PCs blending all into one box.

the PC gaming is like the underground market that's secretly driving the whole thing.

There is such a thing? Thats crazy. I Didn't realize how close together PC's and consoles have become. The only realy difference is price at this point, which is somewhat proportinal to features. (You can do a lot more with a computer.)

console gamimg is big because its so available to the general public. for pc gaming your gonna have to spend 10x as muich on a system as you would have to for a console. plus it seems like pc gaming carries some sort of a "nerdy" stigma.

but all in all, i think that in the end pc gaming will make consoles obsolete.

I'm pretty sure that consoles have been around longer then PC gaming so to say that consoles are "taking over" would be false. Personally I perfer to game on a console then a PC simple because consoles have better games IMO but yeah FPS suck on them which is why I mostly play games like Gulity Gear and RPGs. :D

Although I am getting into PC gaming, looking forward to a few FPS and WoW.

My last console was a PS2. The DVD drive blew right after the warranty expired and they wanted like 125 bucks to repair it. Screw that, no more consoles for me.

Consoles seems to be taking over the gaming scene. Seeing the recent released of Halo 2, it has become apparent that Xbox and PS2 are more popular than PC gaming.
Since Microsoft owns Bungie, it should come as no surprise that it is strictly an X-box game, designed to sell X-box's and make money for the X-box, which Microsoft also owns of course. This is no different than the exclusive releases Sony and Nintendo do on their systems.

The fact that Halo2 is so wildly anticipated is due to the superb storylines that Bungie is known for, as well as the excellent gameplay and replay value that Halo possessed. This has nothing to do with the PC being overshadowed by console systems. This is simply one of the best games ever made and it would've sold a million copies no matter what format it was released in... PC or console. ("best" being subjective of course, although apparently at least 1.5 million other people think it is also) It's no different than the way Blizzard has made a name for itself and now sells a million plus copies of any new game they release. No different than the great anticipation Half-Life 2 currently enjoys... and if I recall, the CONSOLE ports of the original Half-Life sucked (PS2 did at least). So, these roles are easily reversable depending on the situation.

*tears* Im very big into gaming, friends and I run like 4 cs servers bla bla bla.. Anyway at lunch time some guys were talkin about a console lan at the high school.. I almost cried... WHO THE HELL DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE? LANS ARE FOR PC's ONLY! idlksdflkjsdfiuefljksdfiopsflk... So much anger.. so so much anger.

Well the main benefit of a console besides the low cost is the standardization....no need to worry about driver conflicts, memory, specs, etc...the game will run the same on each and every console. Which is also its disadvantage, since you can't swap out the CPU or video subsystem for better speed in your individual case...otherwise it would introduce differences in the platform. Plus an inherent part of the cheapness is the fact that it's non-upgradable. And if it was upgradable, that would defeat the purpose of it being a console and you'd be better off using a computer. For the price of a console, you can't beat the bargain they are since their processing power is streamlined and concentrated for gaming and so they manage to be on a competitive level. At its introduction, a console will probably be more powerful than an average PC. But you can't expect it to keep up with a top-of-the-line computer, where the video card alone costs more than the entire console.

That's what's great about computers, you can upgrade any part of it at any time, which you can't do with consoles (leaving the troubleshooting to people with PCs). There would be no way anyone would offer the option of dropping $500 worth of video hardware into a console that cost half as much, and then in that case, the CPU would still be underpowered to take advantage of the new video system, and pretty soon you'd be replacing everything else like a computer, and paying just as much, and the end result would be a computer. And you're also limited to the TV with a console. No 2048 x 1536 for you. If you're lucky enough to have an HDTV, even then in most cases you'll have up to 1280 x 720, and limited to 60Hz.

The casual console gamer who knows little or nothing about computers or fussing with them is well served by consoles. Those of us that want control over our speed, frame rates, and detail and push our systems (and thus our budgets) to the limit will be rewarded by the PC gaming experience.

What do you mean by "my 9800pro barely lasted 10 months"? I have a 64MB GeForce4 Ti4200 card that is much older technology than your 9800 Pro, and it plays the latest games fine, just not with good graphics settings. You don't have to run games on the highest settings/resolution. So why wouldn't an Xbox/GC/PS2 be considered outdated just because they are based on 4-year-old graphics technology?

I'll examine one aspect of console vs PC gaming: 'real' racing games.

IMO realistic racing games are not meant for the PC
  • races can long, so a console environment will more likely be more comfortable than a computer desk.
  • console racing games are tweaked to work with the system's controller, control of the car is more predictable (especially w/ today's analog controllers.

  • while extra money and effort has to be put in for the computer to add gaming input devices and calibrating them to work properly.

Personally I have tried many racing games for the PC and they just don't have that lasting appeal that say, Gran Turismo has.

One of the main things that seems deters console gamers from going to the PC is the NAME.

Personal Computer?

Please. It does a little more than calculators and word processors... playing video games on your calculator? Does the picture of a socially-inept acne-ridden teenager come to mind?

How about... Media Center?
That's more along the lines of what we're going for

Consoles have way better names... XBox, PS2, GameCube?
Any of them can be took and compared to "Computer", smack it up, bend over and drop a deuce on it :(

well, okay i meant that i got my 9800pro on new years day and i sold it to get something "better" to run my games at the standard i prefer. don't get me wrong, i meant it mainly as that, if you want to stay "cutting edge" in the PC hardware, you gotta upgrade every release, in consoles, it's every few years or so. PCs just keep pushing the edge and consoles don't.
