Just picked up my Doom 3 equipment this weekend!

6800.jpg

I'm really impressed with this card so far...a most worthy upgrade for my 9500 pro!

Those Farcry CDs are so colorful, you can almost taste the rainbow.

Sweet job, I have to wait till August 2nd for my card to ship. (And longer for my equipment, agh! My Doom 3 will have to wait.)

Hey where did you guys buy your Far Cry game?? I bought mine on newegg and the CDs I got look super suckie just plain light blue background and FAR CRY text on CD.

You'll love the card. I'm honestly thinking about switching to nVidia this time around (from a Radeon 9600), it's surprising. It's not a matter of brand loyalty, but I just don't really want to forgive nVidia for cheating at benchmarks, it's quite upsetting for me as a consumer and a gamer.

(Yes, before I spark a flamewar, I know that ATi has been accused of cheating at benchmarks. ;))

I bet he got his card at that one site, you know, that one site. ;)

(Checks)

Ah, yes. eVGA's store gives you a free FarCry with your purchase of a 6800GT.

By the way... whoever cares, I just took off my heatsink on my eVGA today and put AS5 on the chip and RAM, and it didn't do anything at all. Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but it appears that the tape on the RAM doesn't really hinder anything.

sorry to burst your bubble but recent info states a 256 meg card required to run high settings...

128 will get medium only..

FarCry is bundled in all 6-series retail evga cards....whether you get it at newegg or the evga site....its the reason I ordered mine, all the cards are the same (GTs) so why not go for the one with free stuff?

I'm planning on getting the exact same card as well. Glad to hear your liking it, makes me more confident in purchasing it.

I just bought a 6800 today. :( Maybe I'll take it back and get a gt.

Could you post a link to this info?

Yeah, Far Cry came bundled with the card...fun game, but got kind of annoying towards the end.

Depends on how well you want it to run. If he doesn't mind lower than average frames, then he can run it on high till pigs can fly.

look at the doom3 guide to 512 mb card thread on main video section..

here is a snippet

Medium quality uses compression for specular, diffuse, and normal maps. This still looks really really good but compressing the normal maps can produce a few artifacts especially on hard angled or round edges. This level gets us comfortably onto 128MB video cards.

It's just the texture compression option that will have to be lowered -- everything else like lighting, effects, sounds, animation, etc can run at high settings (depending on your cpu of course). According to an earlier statement, there isn't THAT much difference in texture quality between a 128mb card and a 256mb card. With a GF6800, you'll have the fastest 128mb card on the block.

All this means is that some of the texture info will have to be dumped onto system RAM if you use the high texture setting on a 128mb card. This will cause a big performance hit, but you could get away with it by lowering the system res (especially if you have a good system).

Yes, from this article, the normal-maps in this mode have been compressed, but the texture resolution has NOT been downsized (this is done in low-quality ONLY). So the result is that it will still look really good despite some compression artifacts that you may see if you're looking with a critical eye.

Now if they were using DXT compression, then there would be a big difference in image quality. However, in that same article, it seems they use an offshoot of an ATi's technique at texture compression of normal maps, so it should look just fine on all modern cards (IE the 6800 and x800 series)

so basically doom3 is still going to look perfectly fine for him unless he has an extremely keen eye or likes to stare at enemies instead of shooting them. Bubble not burst ;)

Just ordered the same card today from Newegg. Should ship tomorrow. Nice step up from my Ti4200.

I am not too worried about the 128 megs of RAM as my old eyes probably wont see much of a difference anyway. :D

i had the card for 3 days .... i HATE GREEN PCB's....they drive me mad, so i sold it and bought the MSI :)

Far Cry rocks! I play it at 1280x1024 with 2xQ AA and 8X AF and details mostly on high with no slow downs what so ever.

It gets 8100 on 3dmark 2003.

well i have an 18" LCD, so it maxes out at 1280x1024, so i have nothing much to worry about, i play with 2X AF and everything on 'very high' at 1280x1024 with no skipping except a small spike when i open doors and such in far cry. i can play every singl other game like UT2k4 on full settings and 1280 also with no skipping at all. Also the A64 gives it a nice kick, so some credit is due there

im going to upgrade again once nforce 4 comes out and PCI-E gets onto S754 A64's ... get me a nice PCI-E 6800GT with an nf4 chipset :)

Very cool.

Far Cry LOVES CPU and memory bandwidth it seems. I had recently just gotten the card and was getting sub-par performance in Far Cry. I traced it to my CPU/Chipset since my card seemed to be working fine (I get around the same 3dmarks as you guys).

I asked because I just ordered me a a64-3200+ myself to get rid of my 2.4-533-P4 bottleneck.

If I continue to get poor performance after that, then something is very wrong with my card and will have to take it back. However, I think my problems in Far Cry will be solved after this upgrade ;)

Bring on Doom3 :D

I got my Far Cry on DVD direct from AMD. ;)

^^ Yup that was the sweet spot for my card too. However, I'm going to do some doom3 demo loops to make sure before I settle on it.

Even though FC came free with my card I went ahead and bought the DVD version anyways. Show my support and all.

GDR3 Memory is supposed to run pretty cool anyways ;)

Congratz with ure geforce 6800, a good choice according to curcumstances, since ATI is really gonna regret with DX 9.0c and OpenGL.
I have ASUS FX 5900 think i m fine for now. I m waiting for prices to go down for 6800 ULTRA or NV 45.

am i the only one who thought farcry wasn't worth the cd's it came on?

unless they vastly improved the game, over the demo that's out now.. it doesnt wow me a bit

ive tried to see if any of my friends had the retail, but no avail.

oh well, doom 3 is next week, who the hell needs farcry :D :D :D

Far Cry is good for benchmarking modern hardware... and that's pretty much it.

Once Doom3 comes out, FarCry goes out to pasture.

:)

I sold my 9800Xt and Bought one green 6800 evga, wtih FarCry!!!

green looks good with the dfi lan party... and uv...

i thought the same thing....but you the GT is simply the greatest bang for your buck....the 4 pipes are a big difference.....worthy of me forgiving them for making available a good card for cheap :D

For those of you that asked...my specs are here http://diablo222.tripod.com/sigpic.htm ...it's also in my sig...

Yeah, Far Cry the game was alot better than the demo...except about halfway through it got to be pretty old and I was ready for it to be over...still, the eyecandy was worth playing the second half. Especially with DX9.c and the 1.2 patch :)
