I've been looking at the two items below:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332008
http://www.cfienclosure.com/8283UA.html

They called them raid boxes so thats what I called them, but I'm not looking to mirror drives or anything of that nature. I'm looking for the JBOD setup. Now I was going to just go ahead and buy one of those boxes, but I realized....I have everything at home already to build one of these boxes, including the hard drives.

Right now, I have 4 drives of various sizes in 4 different external enclosures. I hate this setup. When I first got it I loved it, but its annoying now. I plan on getting a 5th drive and the thought of adding another enclosure is painful. So I want to consolidate all the drives into one box, but still keep each drive different and assigned to a different letter. Once again those raid boxes are perfect for the job, but I dont want to spend cash that I dont have to.

So I have a case, the drives, a motherboard, power supply and everything else I might need. I just need to know how to go about setting this up. How do I interface the box with my pc? The raid boxes are using usb, but how would I do it? I just need some sort of general direction. My google searches just left me frustrated. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or needs me to provide more info about my components. Please let me know.

Pull out your enclosed drives and toss them in your pc... assign the appropriate drive letters and you should be all set.

Thats a no go. Not enough room and cooling inside my case since I already have 2 drives in there. I guess if I bought some internal enclosures for the 5.25 bay that could work, but I just dont want 6 drives inside my case. I'm going with the externals.

Well you could use that spare PC as a NAS. Just install FreeNAS on it, hook up the hard drives, and just share them on your home network. Then map the Network drives on your PC:
