Howdy,

I used to build PCs all the time a couple of years back, but I'm kind of out of practice, so I've come here for assistance.

I want a PC for general use, to dual boot Win XP and Ubuntu, and to play World Of Warcraft & Second Life.

I have a DVD drive(IDE)/monitor/keyboard/mouse already.

I live in the UK.

I've been looking around on forums and have come up with this spec:

AMD Athlon x 2 6000+ 3.1Ghz - £82
Asus M3A78 - £65
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) - £19
Hitachi Deskstar HDD (320GB) £42
ANTEC 300 Case - £40
Akasa 500W PSU - £45
Some CPU fan? - £?

(prices are from http://www.overclockers.co.uk)

I'm happy to use the on board graphics for now (I hear that it runs WOW fine), and get a decent graphics card / maybe more RAM in a month or two when I have some more cash.

Just wanted to check with you guys that I haven't done anything super-dumb, missed anything out, or spec'd equipment that won't work well together.

Thanks!

Hi there,
Try answering the questions here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1349433 It would give the people on this forum a little more info to give better recommendations. Your info is good but not quite as complete as could be, such as while you did say you live in the UK (good) you didn't list how big your monitor is which affects resolution, which affects recommendations for your video card. There's also a few subjective things at work here. Namely, what do you consider playing WOW fine? As far as I know, especially with the release of the latest expansions that graphics requirements are a bit up now if you want to play with some of the features turned on. If you are ok with turning everything off you can probably get by with a lot less. Do you have a hard budget or just trying to get as cheap as possible?

Thanks for the help.

My budget is £350. If I can spend a bit less, then that's great.

Monitor is a big old 20" (I think) monitor, which will go up to 1600x1200.

I will not be overclocking.

I'm happy running games with details on low.

What I really want is something that will run WOW smoothly on a low res with medium to low settings FOR NOW, that I can upgrade with a new GPU / RAM over time.

you should definately get an intel system for best performance with a low budget...

theres a few people on here who will piece you together the best deals of the moment within your budget, danny bui, hardwareguru, tiraides amongst others... so just hold on for a bit they will see it.

scan.co.uk may have better prices.

HG hasn't updated his post with a build, but it'll most likely be good bang for buck. ;)

It's been a couple of days, anyone else have any recommendations?

Thanks for the advice about switching to Intel Core 2, I'll bear that in mind.

Please post pics when its built! Also, that CPU should hit 3Ghz on stock voltage/cooling easily (drop CPU multiplier to 11 and bump FSB to 266). ;)
