God has made my mind numb

I want to upgrade my computer. I was looking at spending 500 bucks, but it looks like i'm screwed. I cant use all of my money. And i really want to know for 300 bucks if its even worth upgrading. I am having early signs of Chipset failure, at least thats what Via is telling me.

I currently have:

AMD Xp 2000+ (hottest damn cpu i've ever owned, it has burned me a few times at 144)
Asus A7V266-E mother board
(2x) Samsung 512mb PC 2100 (currently only runs with one stick since mother board or psu cant handle the extra stick, it started to get really bad in may and i've had the computer since i built it back in March 02)
Audigy Platinum Sound Card
ATI 9600xt
Toshiba 16x DVD-Rom
LiteOn 52x CD-RW
(2x) Toshiba (ibm) Deskstar 80gb (reads only 76 no matter what i've done) 7200rpm drives
500 Antec Cool Blue PSU

So is it worth it to buy new system parts or just go all out and upgrad just RAM, Processor, and Motherboard? I really wanted a DVD-RW drive and a good case with some airflow (current case is a steel bitch of heat that sounds like a ac unit) maybe like a Xdreamer case.

I leave it to you guys. I need some ideas by 12noon PDT today thats when i've got to make up my mind or i loose 500 bucks to my grandparents and i really dont want to spend it all on a pc.

hmm, my best bet is cpu+mobo+memory
or something in that way, i would say only cpu and mobo but it would seem that your memoery would have a hard time being only 266mhz fsb and almost everything newer out there is 333 to 400

Well is it worth it to get a 2500 barton/mobile amd? with mobo, and maybe a stick of 512mb 3200? Just in comparison to my current rig and all. That might allow me to get the case i want and a DVD-RW drive. I'm just really confused and all.

I was gonna go with the following

AMD 64 3000+ 754 socket
Asus K8T800 mobo
Corsair 1024mb (2x 512mb) Cas 2.5 PC 3200 ram

But then i wouldnt have enough for a good case or DVD drive.
Ah god i hate this and school is next week. I need a good computer to work with my video projects and my constant pc gaming.

well then its up to you from here, if you wanna go the 64bit route then you cant get the DVD-RW or you go a little lower on the CPU/RAM combo and get the burner. If your looking to save some $$ i would suggest going with some other RAM. Unless you need the lower latencies on the RAM and the pretty heatsinks then you can buy lower quality 3200 RAM.
