I'm in a real bind now... :(

All this new tech coming out means that I'm gonna stick with my current system for about a year more.

However, I badly need a video card upgrade. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 5900SE, because I like nVidia stability and drivers. I know that there will be many of you that will swear by ATI's driver stability, but for me in the past it's been the worst thing in my life.

Honestly, what would be the best choice for me? I have a $200.00 budget, and I will be playing games including:

NFS Underground
Deus Ex: Invisible War
FarCry
Half Life 2
Thief 3

I want some real input here, not fanboyism. I'm open to both camps (ATI and nVidia), but I'm torn between the two, and would like some arbitration. :)

Thanks in advance.

If your budget is $200, try and get an NU instead of an SE... I hear that some places have the NU for under $200.

I've been hearing very good things about the SE lately. Can you tell me why I should consider the NU?

Its faster then the SE. The SE is kind of like the MX. Ie slower. I went through all this a few days ago when i ordered my gainward 5900 for $223 on newegg. They also have a albatron for under 200$ from what i recall or you can always get a XFX or wtf that brand is. And btw i feel your pain on the new technology, etc. But you know what, new stuff comes out every few months (6 month cycles) so you really can't win. So just buy like the 2nd or 3rd product from the top and your golden especially since most will run the same spec as the highest priced product or even close. Such as the 2500s that run 3200 and higher specs (i have one of those too see sig! =D), or these 5900 NUs that run 5950 spec usually!

Did you OC your Gainward? Normally how much can you OC a NU to (core/mem)?

Umm its coming by fedex today...... Waiting patiently....... But till then go to newegg and find the albatron 5900 NU and click on reviews. Some of the users mention hitting 5950 speeds along with the XFX one and gainward which is also under reviews.

EDIT: Check out my thread like 2 below this one! =D

In a good or bad sense?

I am shying away from Gainward, due to the checkerboard problem I experienced when I first got my Ti4200. Alternatives? I hear BFG is not producing the video card anymore.

Newegg..... go now! :)

EDIT: If u can't get the XFX 5900 NU then get the albatron 5900 NU. Problem solved.

If I had $200 for a vidcard, I'd get a 9700Pro. But I guess you didn't want to hear that. As for NVidia, I'd just get the 5900 as everyone else has suggested.

BFG Asylum FX 5900nu $175.49 shipped.

The BFG 5900nu cards are some of the best OCers, easily getting to 5950 ($400-$500) speeds and higher. Their cards are very very well built, have VIVO, and a true lifetime warranty. I've had mine for about 3 months now, it's been perfect, and I wouldn't trade it for any other card out there. It's gotten up to 545 core / 1000 memory, stable in gaming.

Gainward did have a bad batch of ti4200 cards back in the day, but they got their act together and gained their reliability back. Their current FX 5900nu is also a great OCer. The one I compared to my BFG got up to 540/1000 stable.

The BFG card takes up 2 slots, and the Gainward only 1.

$155 + 7.25 shipping =$162.50 = Win!

g0g0g0g0g0!

if you dont mind used ..check out sell/trade section ..sometimes you can find some really nice deals ...if new ..then go for a 5900NU of somekind ..or you can get a Leadtek Winfast 5900U full retail packaging with ViVo capabilities for $265 shipped (used)

saw that in buy/sell/trade here ...:)

You can get really good deals if you look around. Just recently there was a 9800NP for $129, and a 9700NP for $115. Both new, from a pretty reputable site.

Thanks Ibanez, but I'm pretty much set on either the BFG 5900NU or the Gainward 5900NU.

BFG stopped making the 5900's, so I ordered mine from Xtreme Gear Monday night... estimated to get here on Friday, along with all my other stuff. BTW, you can flash it to the Leadtek 5950 BIOS, and it becomes a 5950 with 128MB memory (=D). Its a great deal as long as you get one before they're all gone.

I just bought it from the same place you did. I hope I'll get it on Friday. Total was $188.00. Also, it should be faster than the 5900SE that I was gonna get originally from Newegg.com.

Thanks guys, I'll report back.
