i have 2 2gb sticks of ocz ram in my computer i looked in my computer properties and it says its running 2.00gbs of ram whats going on?
 
are you running a 32 bit operating system or 64 bit?
 
you need to upgrade to a 64 bit operating system in order to see the other 2gig, 32 bit can only address up to 4 gigs of physical memory but that includes total memory including video card memory, etc..

The system should still detect more than 2GB of memory both in the BIOS and in the OS.

What MOBO are you using? It sounds like it could be a chipset limitation, you need a BIOS adjustment, or you may possibly even have a bad RAM slot.

?? as far as i know, windows xp sp2 and prior will NOT tell you total memory installed if its above it's addressable limit. Vista will, and i'm not sure about xp sp3.

However, the bios should definitly tell you total memory installed, but it sounds like you probably just need to upgrade to 64 for all 4 gigs to be recognized .double check what the bios tells you, if bios sees all 4gigs, you need to upgrade to 64bit If bios doesn't see all 4 gigs, try reseating the memory, otherwise dead chip.

The OP is basically looking in the system properties in windows. With 32 bit windows depending on the configuration it'll max out at 2.25~3.xxgb depending on all the other memory it needs to address. He's not looking at the BIOS information.

I thought they patched XP also but I know they pasted Vista 32bit for the OEMs/SIs.

Also, this could be a hardware issue or chipset limitation so OS may not fix it.
 
we cant know for sure whats going on without more info. OP, please post full system specs, ram amount seen by bios and memtest results.
 
im not very good at all that how do i do a bios memtest i know how to check it and system specs are
motherboard: Asus M3N-HT deluxe
Ram: OCZ Vista upgrade ddr2 800 4gb
CPU: amd athlon 64 x2 5200+
HDD1: seagate barracuda 320gb
HDD2: maxtor 250 gb
video card: evga 9600 gso
PSU: rosewill 500 watt

i forgot to mention probably the main reason for my confusion it now reads as 2.00gb when it used to read something like 3.89 im hoping a stick didnt die.
 
What do other programs (such as CPU-Z or Everest) show? It may be the case that one stick died.

have you also checked your bios as others have mentioned? it'll tell you how much memory is present, and if it isn't 4 gigs then yes, you can assume one stick is dead, only thing is that you'll just have to check which stick it is :)
 
Sounds like a DIMM as 32 OS does not have a 2GB limitation and you said it at one point saw closer to 3.25GB's? Bad DIMM?
 
It's possible it's a BIOS setting. I can set my dual Opteron machine's memory remapping settings so it only shows 2GB in a 32-bit OS.

As for what the bios is reporting, it should display it on startup.

When I first upgraded to 4GB XP, Vista64, and the BIOS were only showing 2.5 (dual procs, 2 northbridges, SCSI, and 2 vid cards probably didn't help). I changed one setting (forgot which... been a while) and got all 4GB to show up in Vista64 and the BIOS. XP only recognized 2.0, but I didn't worry about it. I might be able to get XP back up to 2.5 while still seeing all 4 in Vista if I messed with the BIOS, but I haven't run it in a year so I'm not going to bother.
 
so after looking close inside my case i noticed something that i didn't really see before. My memory was out just enough so that it wasn't fully plugged in on one side, and i have to say i feel like a complete moron. But now it's reading as 4096MB in cpu-z and 2.75 in system properties. thanks for everyones help and sorry for wasting your time.

It happens. I always triple-check to make sure everything I plugged in/connected is actually plugged in. :)
 
Hey, lesson learned and it also did not involve shipping stuff off for an RMA. Good to see you got it going.
