I'm finally staying at a house were power isn't so much of an issue so I've started doing the SMP core on my Intel Quad 2.8ghz. I don't want my room to be a zillion degrees, so it's only SMP right now, no GPU cores. I used the advanced flag and big units. It started me on a 6702 unit. How long should I expect this one to take and do I have to baby sit SMP still or is it better than it used to be?

Have you already folded 10 SMP work units using a passkey yet? If you have, SMP is set and forget as it is darn stable. Once in a blue moon you may get hit with a bad work unit, but that appears to be extremely rare now. Many of us run our dedicated SMP folding rigs months at a time without intervening at all and thus only stopping it to tinker or perform maintenance.

I don't even know what a passkey is or should I say I don't remember. It's been a while since I've folded. I used to be into it hardcore and was up to about 30,000PPD before I lost my job and couldn't afford the extra money for the power usage anymore.

I suggest getting rid of the advanced flag. you'll get 670x series WUs that are pretty bad on PpD. stick with regular SMP 4. I've gotten rid of the flag on all of my rigs.

I'm only getting 970ish PPD with this current block. That is horrendous. I see why they said to lose the advanced stuff. It will finish quick enough, but that seems very low PPD for a quad core considering I used to get as high as 14-1500 on my old Athlon X2.

Don't use FAHmon, you need HFM.net

Welcome back! Fold on!

The bonus is a big part of your ppd. Set up HFM, get your passkey in place, and then see what your ppd looks like.

I remember you not that long ago. When was the last time you folded? The landscape has changed so drastically since fall of last year that it's hardly recognizable now. There are changes across the board even with the uni-processor client and Stanford released the GPU3 client for Fermi.

Intel quad cores (S775) get somewhere in the 5-6000 PPD range on the best WUs if they're clocked high enough. From AMD only the hex-cores make great PPD on single sockets now since they can OC quite high. In any case, welcome back!!

I downloaded the HFM.net thingy and it says I'm getting 4638PPD with an ETA of 19 hours to finish this block. That's nuts, my old x2 would shit a solid gold brick if I tried to crunch this bad boy on it. It certainly has changed quite a bit. It seems if you had a bunch of SMP clients, you could use less power and get more PPD/watt than GPUs with the right units. I'd run a GPU client, but it would turn my little room I have my PC in into an oven in no time flat. Just running the SMP made it noticeably warmer.

Yea, the savings are in smp, hence a few of us have dual xeon builds, 45-85 k ppd from a single client
