if your pump dies?

alright so when i first built this system i had it watercooled after about the first week i was sitting in my room watching a movie i had just downloaded when i heard my pump whine which eventually led to the pump dieing, part of the inside shatterd.

i immediatly went back to air for the past 3-4 months
now im debating on weather or not to put the water back in danger den sent me a new pump free of charge and i hate to leave these expensive blocks sitting around

now on to the point i leave my pc on even while im not home, my question is if my pump dies again will the water in the block and the lines still be enough to keep everything cool until i get home and find the pump has died??

any input is welcome guys :p
 
No it will fry your computer. There are alternatives though. You can set your BIOS to shut down at a preset temp. Another option is to use a smart fan controller like the Aquaero or Fan-O-Matic. You can also use a thermal switch that cuts the PC power as a fail-safe as well. Aqua Computer makes such a device.

Every board on the market today has a safety shut down temp...you will not fry your computer unless it is incredibly old (in which case it was probably time to upgrade anyways)...or you specifically turned off the shutdown temp. The shutdown temp is on by default, you would have to disable it to fry your computer. There is no need for any of the frivilous and expensive pump monitoring devices to save your cpu, as any motherboard will do the same thing for free.

Now where the thermal switch would come in handy is if you had a TEC setup like DFI_Daishi and you made it so that the TECs would also turn off. Because even if the CPU shorts out if your watercooling fails the TEC will keep going and burn out your cpu (and boil off the water...melt solder and other sorts of nasty things).
 
Option2: Buy another pump and use both. This way if one pump dies the other one will hold the load. I doubt if both would die at the same time.

True...you could buy two extra pumps and it would still be cheaper than an aquaero!

Bottom line : The aquaero and the Fan-o-matic are neat toys, but dont get them to save your CPU in case of a pump failure.
 
Every time I've ever left my pump unplugged, the computer has blue-screened due to instability. I plug in the pump, turn the computer back on, and it's fine. Of course, a CPU not near its overclock limit may be prone to some physical damage if it were allowed to heat up enough.

Well you might be interested as they are dropping in price. The current price for an Aquaero LCD is only about 100 Euro's. They have different models that go up to about 139 Euro's as well if you want TOTL. :D At the current exchange rate that is about $125 + shipping and customs.

the mobo will shutdown if the option is there an used.....and i havent seen a mobo with that option in years...no need to buy extra products....

a rather noisy solution, thats not really needed....but lol, redundancy.....:)

check your bios enable the shutdown feature, it works, and works well....and boy dont forget to plug that pump, better yet leave it plug all the time.....in my many years of wc, i have always left my pump on 24/7......only two pumps have died on me, a 1046(lasted about 2 years) and a hydor(this pumps in my opinion suck)...uhhh uhhhh and a 650 that i killed myself....lol that thing deserved to die to noisy, there was no way i could sell it an pass the burden of its noise to somebody else....lol

I have the shutdown enabled, but because my CPU will lock up due to stability at temps way lower than critical, it never reaches anything above 55 or so (my WC setup keeps it around 40 so I'm "cool" under normal circumstances, too.) And of course I leave my pump on MOST of the time :D except when I've been away from home for a while and shut everything off, or after maintenance.
 
if your watercooling an getting 40c at idle your runnin a little warm to me
my temps were around 34c idle 39c load

im just paranoid about watercooling now, especially after my pump died the first time

Very interesting, that is starting to get into a price range which I would consider a bit more reasonable. However I already have an LCD display, and if I were to get the aquaero I would spend a bit more for a VFD, LCD's are just too hard to see.

I still stand by the opinion that getting the those and the aquastream to ensure yourself against pump failure is neither economical or smart. Only get it if you are interested in all of the other features they offer as well.

I agree and check out this thread if you want to see a bunch of screen shots of what it can do. Essentially it can do anything you can dream up. :eek:
