... to spend on a new motherboard, memory, processor, and vid card, what would you get?

It's been so long since I upgraded my stuff I'm completely out of touch with what's good right now. I use my machine for audio recording, video editing, and of course games.

$700 - give me some ideas of where to go with this budget.

Is dual core better than 1 MB of cache?
Are two mediocre SLI cards better than a single kick-ass card?
Are any brands or speeds of memory completely dominant right now?

Just for that video editing Dual Core would give you so much more. Usually 2 mediocre SLI cards will equal to a high end card. Im a memory person so someone else will take care of that for you. I would go Dual Core and just one video card in the highend area. You can get like a X1900XT for 430 if you look good enough. 7900GT's are 320 and are damn good and 7900GTX's are 480 and above. Those are kinda hard to find though, but in the next week we should see them again.

I would buy this:

AMD X2 3800+ $295.99 Shipped

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562

ASRock Dual SataII $68.98 Shipped

GSkill 2*1GB $145.80 Shipped

X1800GTO $252.89 - $50 = $202.89 Shipped After Rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814161004

Total = $763.66 - $50 = $713.66

You will probably need a new PSU though.

This would be a good setup. The only change you might consider would be an Opteron 165.

I would spring for a better motherboard, TBH....

one of the DFI infinity's would be nice, or the lower end asus boards

Save up til you can fork out about a thousand then get a much nicer setup instead of constant budget parts

DFi Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D 122.99

Opteron 165 socket 939 $327.00

G.Skill 2GB ( 2X1GB ) DDR400 RAM 140.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231047

eVGA 7900GT $319.00

= about $910 for these core components, a lot of people like to recycle some old parts into new machines like harddrives dvd burners etc, whichever case you like, i'd reccomend a decent PSU like the OCZ Powerstream 520 and if you are serious about lots of video editing maybe a 74GB raptor drive and a big storage drive to go with it. who knows

=863. 700!=863 Mail in rebate? I would bet that doesn't help.

Awesome, thanks guys. That gives me a lot more direction.

As for drives, I'm well taken care of. My current rig has 4 drives, including two 120GB's in a stripe which works great for video editing.

I never really thought about Opterons. That's a good idea.
