I have an Areca 1680ix-8 raid card which i'm using. What happens if the controller breaks down? Can i just change it for a new card and it finds my raid?
Can i change to an 1880 or do i have to use the same family of cards?
I'm guessing that i cannot exchange it for an Adaptec or other brand?

So what happens when a hardware controller goes *Pzzzzttt* ? :)

you can probably use any card from areca and you will be fine. I've upgraded raids before, they just import.

Ive read that not every areca card will do, only some. You need to check it up.

But in general, you can buy a similar Areca card and replace it. As long as the card is manufactured, it should be no problem.

Of course, with software raid such as ZFS / BTRFS / mdadm, you dont have this problem of finding a similar card.
