what happens to the small IT guy?

I do IT support for small companies in Texas, I have a few clients that pay me monthly maintenance contracts.. If cloud computing is the future, what happens when I am no longer viable becasue they can just go to the Internet for everything?

I dont think I will be able to make a living on connectivity when the ISP's can help them get connected right?

what will I do in 10-15-20 years?

just curious?
 
That will never happen. As long as there are computers, there are problems. The "cloud" is not a free, or even affordable resource, for the vast majority of companies. It's not even remotely realistic - it's just another fly-by-night ridiculous buzzword with no real value.
The fact is that small companies, have small needs. They also have support needs. The cloud does not provide competent staff, local support, or anything other than a very limited resource.
 
AreEss is dead on - Cloud computing as a concept is valid, but the "cloud" won't be solving problems for most places. Your job ain't going anywhere ;)

well this puts my mind at ease for now... I guess I should be more concerned about the country we live in and where its headed...

Bingo on that, I worry about that one every day. Cloud-shmoud... economy-constitution-war-wha?!?! damn :(

IT support is always needed, average users and small businesses dont have time to learn to handle technology stuff. They run and manage a business, only "using" a computer to assist.
 
cloud computing and its current IT buzzword status will come and go, small business makes up the vast majority of our country's output as far as workforce goes. sure theres the few major conglomerates that are vying for "Umbrella Corp" status but they make up the minority when it comes to sheer numbers of business and who actually works for a living. when i worked for Dell the overall major focus was on the SMB market(small and med business) thats where dell made its fortunes and will continue to do so, theres just more overgrown mom and pops than there are multibillion dollar corps.

not to mention it doesnt make sense for a company of any size to offload potentially confidential data(or any data for that matter) onto "the cloud"....sounds like a security nightmare to me.
 
It will take many years for cloud to reach it's vision, but I would not be quick to assume it will never happen. Technology does advance at a rapid rate, and I wouldn't plan on the jobs we have today being around for more than a decade or even less. Fat clients will still have their place until web browsers can compete (atm they cannot), but don't kid yourself for a second that big business doesn't want to cut you out if they can.

My advice is working towards being the cloud. Maybe the name cloud will go away, but the underlying concept will not die. Corporations want it and so do users. Look at netbook sales.. they are booming. People are growing tired of Windows vs Mac vs Linux and all the problems that come with each one. They just want to hit power and in a second have their facebook and their twitter and their picasa. These programs will just keep getting better and better and make the underlying OS less and less important. Think about games too, PC games have been in a steady decline for years as they move to the console.

Maybe the consumer market will go first but business has more unique needs, so they will not move quite as fast, but still, they probably will at some point. Even if it is a hybrid approach where they control their own "cloud" I think we will see this at some point.

Software-as-a-service is a great concept, till you meet Reality, and Reality is a harsh Mistress.
The infrastructure to make the cloud mainstream is not there, and creating it is cost-prohibitive.

The end user will never accept a pay-as-you-go plan for software, and Google Docs and whatever other free services are out there will not be the mainstream because money will still have to be made. Once Google Ads will go the way of Classifieds in print media the Google shareholders will quickly look at cost cutting, and revenue generating.

Netbooks are crap, they are just a fad because they are small and sexy, till you actually own one and realize that you just wasted $300.

Anyway, cloud is good for those who have their own infrastructure to run it on, reality will be cloud free for a long time to come.
