IE closing after URL is typed.

Yeah. I open IE, I type in a URL and hit enter, and either a small piece of the page will load then IE closes, or it'll just simply close altogether.

I can use a previously visited URL, search result, shortcut or favorite and then it'll open and stay open.

But when I go to type in a URL, it closes. And then I have to reopen it again and find something else to do.

The problem sometimes, but rarely, goes away when I remove all cookies and stored web pages, but it still comes back after that.

I've even repaired the O/S, run 3 different virus scanners and Norton WinDoctor.

And I still have the same issue.

If any of you have heard of this problem I'd greatly appreciate ANY help you could throw my way.

Thank you.

Ok.

I suggest scanning your system while on safe mode and with system restore disabled

good luck

Thanks. Will try that.

But it's just so bizaare that I can navigate folders, but IE slams shut.

Maybe I should type in a folder location and see what happens???

***

Edit: A-ha!!! I just tried it with a folder name instead of a URL, and the folder closed, just like IE has been doing.

I think we might be onto something???

Not sure of what could cause that, what are you using to scan your system?

I use while in safe mode and in this order:
Ad-Aware
Spybot
RootkitRevealer
AVGFree

And if any of the systems i scan has any spyware or virus those badboys get rid of it :D

Avast! is another free anti-virus program that works well. Scanned my dad's computer and Avast! picked up many more trojans than AVGfree.

Do you get any error message? Something about submitting this error to Microsoft, assuming you don't have that turned off, might be able to point you towards a particular file causing the trouble.

Friend of mine had a similar problem a couple of days ago, anything typed caused the error message then the crash. Turned out the lastest version of the Yahoo! Toolbar DLL was causing the crash.

Nope, no error messages or anything. IE simply closes after I hit Enter. And yes it is turned on.

Toolbars, *gag, choke* I never use them. I hate them with an untold passion! My boss had 7 of those damned things running and couldn't figure out why his system was so slow.

I do have Yahoo Messenger though. It gave me the option during install of adding/using their toolbar, but I unchecked that box so it wouldn't install.

Put your Windows CD in your drive and run "sfc /scannow". Let it do its thing then try again.

I think I did that once already??? But I'll do it again today after I get home from work.

Ok. I ran sfc /scannow And I'm still getting thr IE closing situation. It's annoying the [H] outta me.

Does anyone have any other ideas???

I know if you have the advanced option of "do not save encrypted pages to disk" ENABLED, it will prevent certain weblinks from opening. (like a .net exe for example).

But normally you can surf just about anywhere until you hit the link that doesn't work right. So I doubt this is your issue. Can you visit any webpage or just not a particular one?

Other than that longshot, have you tested your RAM lately? (memtest.org)

It only happens when I type in an addy and hit enter. But not from the url memory list. It even happens when I open a folder and try to browse to another folder.

My ram is brand new Mushkin. This problem was going on before I got the new ram.

I went from 1-512(PC-333 Generic) to 2Gb(PC-400 Mushkin)

I'm already running that side by side with IE just in case.

But the more I dig, the more I think it's not solely an IE thing. Or else why would folder navigation be giving me the same issue???

If you already have Firefox... why even bother with IE? I only leave IE on my systems at all because WinUpdate won't work in Firefox

When problems get to a point like this and youve exhausted possibilites of spyware and viruses and such, i usually start uninstalling everything i dont need. Then if it still does it i give up and wipe the hard drive.
It may be faster just to re-install windows ya know.

Yeah. But lately, after I ran sfc /scannow again, it's started become slightly intermittent. But still %90 closing.

I only wanna wipe & reinstall as a last resort because I think I might be at my limit for reactivation.

Yeah I know most people just lie and have it reactivated, but I'd rather spend the $150 to be safe than sorry.

you try a chkdsk /r from reconvery console
if that does not work, do a 2nd option repair

I wonder, do you perhaps have yahoo toolbar installed, if so uninstall it. That could be the problem, I know that lots of people that I had call in had that problem. Give it a try and let me know thanks.

NO! I never install ANY toolbars. To me they're almost as bad as, if not worse than, viruses. Because they allow an outside source to run code on your machine. Ick!
