IE and Windows Media Player crashing

Everytime I try to open a WMV windows media player immediately quits and prompts me with the error report thing. IE is doing the same thing as well. I hardly ever use IE, but WMP not starting is killing me Is there some way to fix this or to possibly set Quicktime or VLC to auto-play movies?
