This may be a big newbie question, but what is the best way to ID hardware that you have no idea what it is. I mean EVERY single piece. I have never thought about this because I never came across this problem before, I have always known what I have. Where is the name usually located on the physical hardware? And I'm sure they list the model on it too right?

My friend works at this place that cuts conveyor belts, and they are having problems with their computers, so I went there, and they were completely awful. Never been maintained. To run an installation program for some cell phone software, it took about 5 minutes (real time) to do anything after the loading bar got to 100%, and thats just to start the installation. I don't know how they get any actual work done on them. So I believe its time for a reformat. A local networking company (whom my friend works at lol) set up the system. But the guy doesn't want to pay $65 an hour or whatever they charge, so I offered to do it. But of course they have no drivers or anything for the software. Thats my only problem. I need to find out the exact hardware inside so I can get the drivers for everything.

My advice is to tell the company to pay the $65 an hour. It'll save you, them, and everyone involved a lot of hassle. The minute you fuck up their entire system is the minute you try to figure out how to make it to old Mexico before they decide to cut you instead of conveyor belts.
 
Well that is a good point. But the only important thing they have on there is Quick Books. They also have a tape back up, so nothing can really get screwed up. I just want to be careful, having never had this sort of resposibility before.
