Right now i'm running (see sig) @ just under 2.8ghz(2796mhz) w/ a 233 mhz fsb w/ my ram at 1:1, so its definitely running over its spec speeds(see sig). I can’t OC much further w/ speeds FAR below spec speeds let alone current ram speeds.

I am running these speeds right now because i can't really get much higher for whatever reason, even running my ram in single channel or just 1 stick alone, both OC to the same point. I cannot get my FSB over 240 regardless of the setup, i can hit 244, but prime95 gives me errors, and i had a few random reboots. [edit---when playing a game for 30 minutes, game would hang, then reboot when trying to exit the game.]

have tried:
setting multiplier to 1:1, 5:4, 3:2.
changing ram voltages from 2.55-2.85.
even tried upping CPU voltage a little.
disconnected all hardware i don't need.
disabling spread spectrem+everything else in bios.
ram timings, a lot of them.

i'm thinking that my ram is limiting me?? but it does not make sense if i can run a 233 fsb at 1:1 w/ 2.65v when i can't run a 3:2 w/ the FSB increased by another 7 mhz even on 1 stick of ram in single channel. the only other alternative is power, but 420 watts is more than enough, but w/ a random reboots after a 240 fsb worries me in that department. temps are well within spec even w/ case fans off, doubt its heat.

also. i can stick in a stick of mushkin lv 2 an hit a 240FSB. i haven't done much tweaking in the past few months b/c i've been busy, but it bugs me that i can't even get close to a 250 FSB in a stable environ ment.

edit: another important thing is it'll post w/ a 245fsb, but when it is loading WinXP it will hang. a few times it has rebooted at this point.

hope that mumbo jumbo makes sense to somone and i can be helped to push it further.

w/ search disabled and after a couple hours of searching today alone, no luck.

ok somehow when i edited my post to add somthing it quoted myself and did a double post. - delete this.

try this:

set the RAM voltage to 2.8V

up the CPU voltage to 1.6250 V

then whack up the FSB to 245 and see if that boots into windows...also drop the memory timings for now...to say...

3-4-4-8 and see how it fares.

ok i got my computer back up. it crashed the "un-crashable" ami bios on my mobo, this is the 2nd time i have done that. i had to get the bios on a floppy from a friends computer.

using u'r suggestions it posts up to 255 (w/ 1 stick of ram), but won't even start to load xp. i can post at up to ~250 fsb, get into windows at ~245, and not stable at anything over 238 in 5:4 and 3:2. i'll just keep it at 233 for now that seems to work very well for the ram since its running pretty far over rated speeds.

if my computer isn't randomly rebooting when oc'd, and my ram can run at 233fsbx2=466mhz when its ddr400, then why can't i run over 327mhz(245fsb @ 3:2) this makes no sense.

does anyone know anyone w/ an Enlight 420 watt psu?? i bought this b/c of price(compared to enermax, same price as thermaltake 420) and after a week of research it had no negative reviews. all reviews i read were positive w/ good overclocking and good power to the mobo and rails.

the ram i'm running seems to be pretty good, and even w/ mushkin lv 2 which cost my friend over 1 1/2 times as much doesn't fair any better.

is there any possibility that it could be the mobo itself or something else?? i have had a 9700 pro and a 9800 pro in here and its the same problems when it comes to OC'ing my FSB.

edit: just did some more research and found out that the: "Thermaltake 420W, Enlight 420W, and Chieftec 420W power are all made by HighPower Corp. They all have HPC-420 Lables. HighPower also sells their own HPC420W power supplies."

also the review i had bookmarked in Late July when i built this system. click here and here

If it can't reach 250fsb 5:4 then the cpu is your limiting factor because your ram is still in spec. You'll need more vcore to get it stable.

I'm running a regular 2.4 (not C) and this is what's happenin:

CPUZ.JPG

My system is completely stable, and gets no hotter than 45°C under load. I rendered a DVD quality AVI for 2 hours, and that was the hottest it got. Idle it's 30°c.

I don't know what's up with the P4C's, but they seem to not like OC'ing as much as the regular P4's.

Granted, it doesn't have the 800Mhz fsb, but I'm just a hair under it right now.

thats what i forgot to include in the past post, yes, i locked it and tried at all 3 settings my mobo has for pci/agp frequencies. i'll try upping the cpu voltage some to see if that helps. i bought a 2.4c b/c i heard they were very good oc'ers, apparently not. i thought it might be voltage but figured it wasn't b/c i could bearly go near a 250FSB.

i have heard that it is bad to go above ~1.6v though, as long as its not heating up alot, should i worry about going higher?

i never took it above 1.6 b/c i thought it created too much heat, it just idles 3C warmer(10 minutes after windows boot) w/ no case fans on and under load i can actually get it to hit as high as 59C w/ no case fans on.

Intel says the chips are safe up to 1.7v. Though you can go past that with good cooling.

5:4 w/ 2.5-3-3-8 @ 2.65v.

tried for about 2 hours w/ different timings. most other than that don't even post over a 255 fsb, also tried ram voltages from 2.55-2.85. tried 3:2 as well. no luck. when over a 255 fsb i get a black screen saying that some file in the windows/system folder is corrupt or missing, after 3 tries if that doesn't go away i down clock and it disappears at a 250 fsb. but pops up anything over that.

would that be ram related?

i think i've just reached the limit of my CPU. the stock voltage was 1.525, i know some 2.4c's are in the 1.450 range which make them better oc'ers.

taking my cpu voltages up past 1.800 also doesn't help, just brings my load temp up to 51C at 3.1 ghz, so i could take it up higher.

edit: just to clarify, according to asus probe, my voltages don't wonder more than +/-3% for everything except for 3.3v and 5v which go about 4%, on a voltmeter they all vary <3% calculated.

Read a bit through this thread and see if any of that sounds familiar to the problem you're having. Basicly Intel 865/875 boards seem to have weird incompatibilities with memory modules using CH-5 chips; people can't seem to get past the 250mhz FSB range when using either 5:4 or 3:2.

I recently upgraded and had a problem very similar to yours, at 1:1 my memory (Mushkin LV1 PC3500) with lose timings worked fine into the 240mhz FSB range, so one would think that at a 5:4 ratio my FSB should be good all the way up to 300mhz, assuming of course my CPU could make it that high. Instead I found that I around 250mhz I hit a wall and there was nothing I could do to get past it.. For three days I was pulling my hair out trying to think of what I was doing wrong, ad then I found that thread.

I've since ordered some GEIL Golden Dragon modules as I hear they pretty much have no problems with my board (Abit IC7), they'll be here Monday and hopefuly will be the answer to my troubles. But then again, I have no idea if your OCZ memory even uses CH-5 chips. For all I know they might not, and my entire post has no relevance to you at all. :(

very interesting. thanks. i think i'll just sit tight w/ a 233 FSB for the most ram bandwidth since its 1:1 and 250 if i need that extra oomph, which i would only notice when encoding over a few hours.
