I was thinking about putting together a second system to use mainly for internet surfing, music burning, and some RPG's non graphic intensive games. I was hoping to keep it around 500 bucks but with the things I've picked out I've gone a bit over. Lemme know what you guys think or what you might change..

Crucial 512MB DDR PC-3200 generic cas 3

Use the onboard ati graphics, on board sound, and use an old HD and CD-RW I have around the house. Other misc. things I'd need would be a KVM switch and some silver paste and I think I'd be set. This would run me a bit less than 600 bucks and be almost silent from the things I've read. Idea's? Opinions?

That was my original plan but the quietest shuttle that I have picked is a P4 based motherboard. Quiet is number one on my list, closely followed by price. An amd based system in a shuttle will run me about 100 bucks less but from what I've read will be noisy. Thanks for the input as all is welcome.

I am not too familiar with SFF machines, but is there a reason why that one is quieter than an AMD solution? I was thinking you could get a 35w mobile, and run it stock with thermally controlled fans (or something like that). That would allow for a cheaper system (500 with a nicer vid card) and should stay pretty cool.
 
Apparently the AMD ones come with a large fan that is used on the heat pipe that is what cools the processor. The P4 model is specifically made for quietness and has the fan operated according to the proc temp. This is what I gathered off the SFF forums here. I of course could change out the cooler fan with another after market one with a fan switch or something like that. I've also found while searching on the net tha the newer shuttle for the P4's use a newer type powersupply which is also quieter than the ones on amd. I figure eventually the new power supply will make it to the amd selections. But who knows. I'm still just throwing around ideas. Thanks again.
