Idea for custom laptop hinge

I got this thing from craigslist for only $240 it works fine and has a core 2 duo 2ghz 2gb ram and a geforce go 7700 in it. Despite it's condition it's a great running machine.

As you can see from the picture the laptop hinges are pretty tore up along with no bezel. I don't really care about the bezel but it needs a hinge replacement bad, and the worst part is the issue is with the actual case as well.

I need ideas on what do to about this. The hinges are not replaceable and I'm not going to buy another case. Any ideas on what I could use as a substitute?

i dunno unless u can find a dead one of the same model for cheap and swap it out. but maybe take some better pics and post them, and im sure somebody here has the know how to help you out. the shit these people build on here, your fix should be a piece of cake.

not looking to fix, looking to replace it doesn't have to look the greatest
 
Hard for me to see exactly what's going on in that pic, but I think I get the gist of it. Some close ups of the each hinge area, from multiple angles might help.

First thing that pops into my mind is taking up a local cabinet maker or perhaps metalworking shop. Ya might be able to find some workable hinges there or alternatively, a method for securing some sort of small bracing to the laptop. Another option might be to take some bondo putty, or something similar that will allow you to sculpt and form it into the shape you need, and mesh that with a hinged solution. Once hardened, it can be pretty tough/durable. Fiberglass could work as well, although if you've never worked w/ it, it's kinduva pain in the ass.

Edit: oh yeah, another thing you could try is taking bare pieces of metal, matching them to your laptops existing mounting points, and then attaching the hinges to the metal plates you've custom shaped.

hmm good ideas

really trying to think of something to put on the back (top) of the laptop case and then also attached at the bottom of the other part of the case. But in a way that would allow the thing to stay open.
 
I recently acquired my daughter's old laptop and was looking for parts for it on ebay. They had just about every part you could ask for, including hinges, cases, etc. Check Ebay. You'd be surprised.

Yeah I don't want put a new case on plus get a new hinge, and this laptop was not common at all. I couldn't pass up a working one with those specs though for that price.
 
are the hinges themselves broken or where they attach to the case?
 
You should hook up a monitor and keyboard/mouse and turn it into a desktop :)
 
I know you may not wanna spend $50 or so, but for what it's likely to take to fix all that, you're likely to be spending close to anyhow. You might save a few bucks, but will it be worth the time/hassle? IMO, I'd just got for the OEM setup, you still end up having gotten a great deal on your laptop after the added cost.

I was hoping someone would have some crazy ideas on a custom case or maybe use some sort of a door hinge. I would have thought with all the broken hinges out there and custom desktop cases, there was someone who had tried something new....guess not, or maybe this isn't the place for creative ideas.
 
This would be the only type of hinge I could think of that will stay in place when open.

Problem is they are rated for more than 30 inch-pounds. You would probably need around 2. Not sure if there are any model type torsion hinges. But if you could find some that were just flat, you could epoxy it to the black area on the base, and then to the outside back of the monitor. Gonna be much uglier than the OEM parts for sure.
