i have an internal 40gb hard drive that i have some files that id like to carry around with me. my problem is installing it in pcs gets annoying, and connecting to laptops isnt possible. basically im looking for a ide to usb 2.0 or firewire adapter or something like that for cheap. i dont really want an enclosure, but if anyone gotta link to a cheap one, lemme know.

You can buy an enclosure for less than $40 nowadays. That's really the best option as it should protect the electronics on the drive's PCB from being touched.
