I just finished rebuilding my computer and wanted to keep using my older IDE PIONEER DVR-710 CD/DVD burner along with a new ASUS 24X Burner, which is SATA.

My new MB is a MSI B85-G41 PC Mate, and does not have the IDE header on the board, only Sata. So I moseyed on down to Fry's and bought a VANTEC IDE to SATA adapter. (CB-IS100)

I changed the Jumper to SLAVE (2nd from right) ...And plugged the adapter into the back, along with the SATA power cable and the 4 pin connector. powered it on and nothing happens!

There is also a bigger 4 pin Molex males, but I called VANTEC and he told me not to plug them in.

So this was a pretty reliable drive in my last rig, and I would hate to have to go buy another sata optical drive.

When it was all plugged in, I went to the bios and it didn't show up there. What I did not do was to go to the Device manager and look to see if there were any conflicts.

And speaking of the new SATA ASUS writer, Are these any good? Earlier I went to insert a GPU software CD, and nothing happened. I had to go into MY COMPUTER and click some things until I saw that OPEN FILES, VIEW FILES, Etc.

Are these devices trash, and I should just buy a sata drive?

Thanks!

I have not read directions from the Vantec. As far as I know this just converts IDE to SATA, You still need to power the device. Plug in the 4 pin power from power supply.
Does Vantec suggest Slave setting?
I do not remember correct setting for one IDE device.

The little 4-pin floppy power connecter is to power the converter only. You will still need to connect the 4-pin molex power to the drive. Also need to set jumper to Master.
Have used the Asus drives in quite a few builds recently and all have performed fine.

Thanks guys!
Vantec told me to switch the jumper back to Single/Master, and oddly enough to NOT to plug in that Molex. I did not initially plug in that Molex, because directions only showed the vonnections as being the Sata, and the floppy smaller 4 pin connector, and I was not sure if I did plug the Molex connector in, it might have caused problems with the new Motherboard.

The other day, I had the original jumper set to master, and not the Molex, and it was able to open/close the tray, but after inserting an audio cd, there was no audio, and after checking in the BIOS, it was not even listed. Would I still have to upload a driver for this optical drive ?

If this device does not work after switching back to MASTER, and connecting the Molex, and still does not show up in the BIOS, then I guess I'll have to return it to Fry's, then buy another Sata drive.
I like to have at least two optical drives.
Again, thanks!

I'm pretty sure Vantec is wrong about that because neither PATA IDE nor SATA IDE can provide power for the adapter.

Here's a 2-way adapter that works well and is currently $4.69, delivered:

The pictures show the older version based on a SunPlus chip; the version that's been shipping for the last 2 years uses a Jmicron chip, which is smaller. Jmicron is better and works with both optical and magnetic drives (I've never tried it with a solid state drive), SATA and PATA. The only bad things about it are the confusing markings (one SATA port is for a SATA drive, the other is for a SATA controller) and the puny PATA connector that can easily be plugged in wrong.
