IDE Slave performance

If I have a data drive on the master channel of an IDE cable, and a system/boot drive that is rarely accessed on the slave channel, how significant would the speed slowdown be? How slow would the drives become?

My only experience with a slow down is with ripping cds. Master optical drive rips about 1 minute faster than slave... IF that. No where near enough to lose sleep over.

I'm looking for information on HDDs specifically, if you have anything.
