ok i have what some people may call a "family" PC....(1st one in sig) i have a 160gb slave and an 80gb master. on the 160gb slave i have important work and personal documents. inorder to keep these safe, each time i log myself off the computer i disable the slave drive (160gb one) via the divice manager. then on a reboot no one can mess with my work (as it is not enabled at all?). do you think this is a good way to keep may work safe?

comments please =]

How secure do you need? There are other methods of accomplishing this, you can use Windows XP/VISTA itself to control access to files/folders based on account settings. If youre feeling paranoid, you can kick it up a notch to truecrypt (free i think) to provide some real robust security, and if youre really paranoid you can use PGP (Pretty Good Privacy, the name is a misnomer, its the best security available).

You could also just leave the drive in a 5.25 inch mobile rack, so you have the drive with you, or locked in a drawer or something when not in use.

you should just keep your porn on an encrypted 2.5" external drive and stash it when not in use.

He said why in the first post, its a family computer, so he wants the pr0n as hidden as possible.:D

His ``safety'' method depends largely on the attackers computer savvy. I do not understand what is wrong with using the windows permissions to restrict access. Then again, I always forget that most people run as administrator effectively disabling permissions.

thanks for the replys but p0rn isnt realy a big thing in my life, it would just be nice to know that my bank details, passwords and work documents are safe from being deleted ect... clearly some of you have experience in "hiding" things:rolleyes:

So your main worry is someone else (kids or such) hopping on the computer and deleting your files?

Your method would work, though it might be a little annoying to do all of the time. I'd probably pop the drive in an external enclosure and just turn it off. Or, change folder settings to not show hidden files, and just hide them all.

Though, let me pose an even bigger question... If these files are so important, you DO have backups, right? If not, I'd get on that STAT...

Don't just turn it off, carry it away.

If there are shared files on the drive, though, then maybe just get a USB flash memory drive for your personal files. You can get 1-2GB for a few tens of dollars at most. If that's not enough memory, get another small hard drive and an external enclosure. For about $100 or so, you can get an 80GB drive + external USB enclosure

I believe that any cheap removable 5.25 inch rack for your computer, with the drive only kept in the computer when you are using it, and the rest of the time in a small, fireproof safe that you store the rest of your valuables in, will give peace of mind.
