IDE Out - 4870X2 and Blu-ray In

+1, Kyle mentioned this before, but no details
one page back

Been up since 3am, was a bit tired. Drove a mounting screw into the edge of the PSU PCB, turned it on, got sparker show and all.

Woah Kyle and me are the same age right now :O does this mean I can work for HardOCP?

Keep it up Kyle, I like the videos, but the videos dont like me, when I switch to fullscreen it freezes, when I ESC out I get an almost completly white screen untill I mouse over items on the website, but at least I can watch the video fine that way.

I finally got rid of my last IDE drive today. I replaced my external 500gig IDE media drive with an internal SATA 1TB drive. Got rid of the last IDE DVD a couple months back, and I went with a single drive also, that is till I can get a Blu-ray drive.

I was expecting a better WC setup. :(

Anyways I am still rocking 2 IDE DVD burners with a rounded 36inch IDE cable. I don't want to retire them since they are rarely used and I am out of SATA ports.

I just built my first SATA-only rig. Lasted about 5 minutes before I had to toss in my 250GB IDE drive from my old dead rig :(. Stupid non-integrated IDE controller literally doubles my POST time...

I dumped my IDE and floppy drives with my last build earlier this year. I also replaced my optical drives with an LG Blu Ray/HD-DVD drive, no complaints. The only thing I really want in the future is a decent board with no legacy connectors; USB 2.0, Firewire, and eSATA only. I never see the parallel and serial connectors but I still don't like having them considering its been about ten years since I've had a device that requires using either.

Other than that I couldn't be happier with my current PC; got it running fast and nearly silent.

I ended up getting a copy of Nero 9. Works pretty well for me. The crap that comes with the drives is almost always worthless.
I thought most drives come with a OEM copy of Nero. A cheap ass shit DVD burner I bought for $80 (that was considered cheap for a DVD burner 2 years ago) came with a OEM copy of Nero.

After watching that I know now that atleast one forum member knows what im talking about when I say "yall" all the time.

In the mean time, yall get ready for a hurricane, get the server to high ground! Last round Gustav was my state's problem, this round his buddy Ike is coming to say hi to Texas (though its looking like it might curve around and come back on us, DAMNIT).

Would you mind sharing how that new LG Blu ray/ HD DVD drive holds up >.>

I cannot speak for Mr. Bennett, but I have the same exact drive in my machine and running Vista x64 with no issues. If you happen to live near a fry's, I usually see them down there running $200. It is a very good drive. Burns CDs/DVDs well, plus it BD/HD-DVD really nice. I use Corel Win DVD, very nice product since I last Win DVD years back. The upconverting is a really nice feature as well. Never any hesitation. It is hooked up to a LG 24 inch LCD monitor.

Pimp My Rig?

Okie dokie. Ill load it up with some porn, put it in a booth, and charge people 10 bucks to get in for 15 minutes. Ill give you 2 bucks out of each "trick" since im doing all the hard work. Damages and stains not covered.

Plus it does Burn Blu Ray discs as well, while not the fastest or cheapest, it is a nice storage medium, just have to wait for prices to come down on the media.

A'men brother...PLEASE NOT LAFAYETTE!!! I just spent $4000 taking 3 trees down (1 hanging over the house) at a house we just moved into the previous thursday...

Cool rig Kyle. Ugh, you reminded me I need to be on the lookout for more hard drive space.. Also, I always wanted to get a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive.. maybe i'll pick one up when the media becomes not so pricey

while my current pc doesn't have any ide devices, the vid did get me to finally remove the empty floppy drive cage my lian-li case came with (yeah so floppies aren't ide of course but they have ribbon cables, close enough :p)

I gotta know, why so long to get rid of IDE? And what about that floppy drive? Do you even have a use for it? I haven't seen a floppy disk on store shelves for 2 years.

I grabbed the Danger Den cooler, the one that Diamond is using for their h30 card, for the 4870x2 I have and it runs at a nice 40C at full load inside my ThermalTake Armor Case w/Bigwater IS pump (To make room for the card).

Was able to get my 4870x2 to run 800/1000 without any issues ... and more importantly ... without the blasted noise.

either i've been saying "nehalem" wrong or the texas accent is stronger than i thought.............. :D

Kyle said it like it has always sounded in my head. It's not that difficult. (If it was supposed to be difficult, I'm sure Intel could of come up with something better than "nehalem"):D

great vid, kyle! I/(we?) look forward to more.

off topic question to Kyle (or anyone who knows the answer)::
Didn't you write columns for Computer Power User magazine a while ago? What happened?

OS, Browser, version?

I was expecting a better WC setup. :(

The fact is I don't NEED anything "better" on this box since I don't OC it. This is my work box. I just took my 8800 GTX WC out of the look and the Corsair Nautilus is more than able to handle the load.

I still constantly use my floppy drive. I still mobos in here all the time that have issues booting from USB stick or pulling BIOS files off them.

My LG came with a Cyberlink suite and it sucks ass. Have not burned a good BD yet. Read up on it, and others have seen the same issue, so I just bought Nero 9, go it from the Newegg, much cheaper than it was at the Nero site.

Got mine at Fry's a couple months or so ago. Bought it to do BD when when we had the Nano vs. Atom article.

No kidding. I bought rewritable disks for sure.

Where are you getting the Nero9? I tried looking it up but nothing comes up from the main nero site.

My bad, did I say 9? Nero 8 Ultra Edition. $35 after $20 MIR.

Kyle, for what it's worth, I have the same case, the same video card, and the same LG Blu-ray/HD DVD drive. The software that comes with the drive isn't that bad, but you really need AnyDVD HD if you're going to be doing any Blu-ray and/or DVD back up. AnyDVD HD is a must own piece of software.

I haven't tried Nero 9 yet, but I have Nero 8.3 and even though it has full support for the LG drive, I burned two dual layer DVD coasters with Nero. I haven't burned a coaster in years before that happened so I don't know what went wrong with Nero, but the software that came supplied with the LG drive burned those same DVD's just fine. Don't get me wrong, I've burned plenty of single layer DVD's with Nero without issue, but after that experience, Nero worries me about burning dual layer DVD's with this LG drive.

AnyDVD, mmmmm.

I gotta know, why so long to get rid of IDE? And what about that floppy drive? Do you even have a use for it? I haven't seen a floppy disk on store shelves for 2 years.

I did not NEED to get rid of IDE DVD drive. Was not going to buy a new DVD drive just to have it on another bus. Floppy, see above, use it all the time for bench testing although USB stick is catching up.

Rajesh Kumar, lead designer on Nehalem, says it the same way.

I quit writing for them when they wanted to edit my articles that had some not so splendid things to say about one of its advertisers. I did not like the edit, so I pulled my article back and have not written for them since.

Great video, Kyle...a little miscellaneous rambling goes a long way here...It seems that a bit of chit chat from the "Big Guy" is really appreciated.

It's a nice rig...but, I have one question...What do you use it for? Besides moderating the forums. What games do you play? If any!!

What web sites do you read?

I look forward to your (or Steve's) next installment on [H]Tv!

It's even funnier hearing kyles laid back "don't stress it" attitude tearing up fanboys at rogcon =D. That "why does 280 suck" comment never gets old.

How does the wrong way to say Nehalem go? i know some people might confuse it with Nihilum.

I have been saying NAY-ha-lem for a while, but the intel guys say nah-HAY-lem.

One more question...what kind of camera is that you're using to make the video?

As for the state of Kyle's PC, which isn't all bad really, I put out a challenge to anyone who lives within 100 miles of Kyle...Contact him, set up a meeting, and make his rig purdy. After all the crap he's put up with from us...someone...anyone...I would, but I really don't think Kyle is into sending his PC to Canada for some cool mod work. (That would be done by Lanpirate of course...he just doesn't know it yet!!)

I'm thinkin of getting some HDD coolers as well. A few months ago, the bottom chamber fan of my p180 was actually caught by one of the HDD cables before I turned it on (I must have messed around with it and put it back sloppy). I didn't hear anything strange, so it could have been like that for weeks or even months. Decided to check speedfan one day, and each drive was fuckin 70+ C ! And the p180 side panel had been open the whole time too.

2 out of the 4 drives have been RMA'ed. I'm expecting the other 2 to kick the bucket sometime :(. Kind of unpredictable though, as this incident happened earlier this spring and the remaining 2 drives are still alive.

Hmm, great machine. I will look into those EZ swap kits..

But the commentary was a tad on the rambling side. :D

Well if Kyle really wanted me to, I'd clean up the wiring for him. I suspect that it isn't because he can't do it, its' because its' not super important to him. When you get busy with other stuff your priorities shift and a clean wiring job is not always at the top of the list.

That is my machine. I edited the video on it/Premiere Pro CS3, I edit all our content on it, runs my mail, my browsing, spreadsheets, graphing, picture editing/Photoshop CS3, FTP stuff for the site, personal video editing ripping and encoding, gaming, movies, etc.

Sony HDR-HC1, bought it the week it came out, been a great handycam. For those of you that give a shit, you can now EASILY import HDV 1080i from your cam into Windows Vista Movie Maker and EASILY edit it.

I will get the cables handled when I get the RAID and other video card in.

more..... viral marketing for [H] lol

I have a virus?!?!?!?!

I have not RMA'd a single drive since I went to those drive cages. They are the bomb! You can get the non-fancy one that just has cooling for $15. They just keep your drives cool. May not be worth it to you, but they give me piece of mind.

If thats the last ide device whats the floppy drive runnning by?

I actually like vids like this, incorperating this kinda thing into reviews would add a lot to them. Could give an idea of noise levels for cards and coolers at load etc, could even show some of the runthroughs of game levels for card evaluations.
