What is the difference between the 80 and the 40 IDE cables? Is there a difference in speed?
Just wondering cuz switching from a 40 to an 80 somehow allowed me to install hl2, well thatm ight have been it I did about 3 things, but yeah, what is the difference? Thanks,

The 40 and the 80 refers to the number of wires and pins in the cable. 40-pin IDE is the older kind and was used on the older ATA-33 and ATA-66 devices such as most CD-ROM drives and old hard drives. 80-pin IDE is the current IDE cable which is used on ATA-100 and ATA-133 hard drives and other IDE devices. It is very possible that the bottleneck of the cable kept you from installing HL2.

are you sure you can run ATA-66 with 40...? cause as far as I'm concerned you need 80 pin cable for that...

It refers to the number of wires, not pins. They are both 40 pin but the later has 80 wires which offers additional grounding(shielding).

I'm with you on that. I thought ATA-66 + had to use 80 pin cables.
 
I knew why they were 40 and 80, I just wondered if there was a difference in speed, or if one was a superior cable, it seems that the 80 is the superior cable, correct?
 
The 80 pins reduce the "crosstalk" (and some more junk) allowing for the ata-66 and above.

Will it make your cdrom's faster/more reliable? No. With the thinner guage wires, I've had 80 pin cables go "bad" on me (user error, I'm sure) but I can fold, bend, mutilate, maul those 40 pin cables without a hitch. I'll just use 40 pin cables for opticals and 80 pin for HDD's
