IDE Cables

40 pin cables have fat wires and 80 pin cables have thinner wires. The wires in 40 pin cables are the same size as a floppy cable. The wires in 80 pin cables are quite a bit thinner. If they look the same then they probably are the same. And 80 pin cables typically have a blue connector in there somewhere. There's a comparison picture at the bottom of this page.

both will have 40 pin connectors (since the additional 40 wires are all ground) and aside from the obvious 80 wire count, will typically have a blue (mobo) grey (slave) and Black (master) connector
