Guys I am having a lot of problems with my server and I think I might have some faulty ide cables.

I have 4 drives. 1 CD-ROM and 3 hard drives running off of the 2 ide controllers on the mobo. I bought some cheap round idea cables a wihle ago and I think they may be faulty or I just got them too long. I forget how long though but they might have exceeded the recommended length whatever that is.

Anywa can you guys recommend some GOOD quality ultra-IDE cables for me. And where to buy them. I need the longest ones possible that are allowed by the standard. I am getting SATA from now on but I still have 3 of these nice Seagate 250 gig drives. So can you guys make some recommends please. Thanks.
 
According to spec they should not be longer than 18 inches. In practical use, who knows?

The problem with rounded cables is that you have 80 wires tightly bundled together so you have lots of cross coupling between wires. The longer the cable, the more cross coupling you'll have. This can lead to data integrity problems.

If your server is built for performance (rather than looks) you would be much better off using flat cables.
 
I've had very good luck with the VGA cables I've purchased from Cables N More. Here's a link to their IDE cables. Reasonably priced, I think they're well worth a try.

Good luck on that, the only place I've seen flat cables is when I buy a new mobo. :rolleyes:
Everyone has switched over to the round ones.

How many do you need. I am pretty sure that I have some laying around (just moved so I need to find the box) and can sell them to you. They'd be the ones from my mobo (Asus). Send me a PM if interested.

The link I posted has two lengths of flat IDE cables, as well as "do it yourself" kits with crimp on connectors.

While 18" is the max "spec" length, most controllers will handle longer cables if the cable quality is decent. Seen it many times.

Might give these guys a call and see if they'd make you some IDE cables out of their teflon SCSI cable products. One of the best cables in the industry.

SVC has ide cables for dirt cheap. from what i can tell, shipping is done for the overall order rather than per item (like newegg).
 
I've never had any issues with rounded IDE cables, or rounded floppy or SCSI cables for that matter. I doubt the problem you are having is because they are round. If it's the cables at all, it's probably because they are cheap or damaged.

Have you considered any other causes of the problem besides cables? I can't speculate because I don't know what the problem is.

i can say i have had problems with an ide cable or two. but it wasnt anything inside, it was the connections on the end. a few wires were pulled from their connectors from pulling the cable out so many times :(
