IDE cables... are they all created equal?

yeah, i got like 3 rounded cables for like $.99 a piece from SVC, and they are good. they take a while to ship, but they are cheap. screw ebay, as those prices are crazy.

:EDIT: Just thought of something. You could do what I have done in the past. Take a razor blade and slice your ribbon cables between each wire. Then twist it together and electrical tape it for a homemade rounded cable. EXTREMELY cheap, and they work. Just a thought.
 
Can't tell.

When looking into round cables you should try to find something with the ribbons covered all the way down to the connectors. In those ebay images you can see *a little* of the ribbon.

You also need to pay attention to how they are wrapped. If all the information lanes are wrapped around one another, you can expect interence which can cause problems at the worst times. Sadly 99% of cables are wrapped this way, thats one reason why you may notice a price jump between certain brands.

In my opinion taking the time to splice apart 80 or 120 ribbon lanes such ain't worth it.

Ohhhhh, that's not nice. I think I'm going to go order alot of somethings from newegg. Then I'll go to svc, zipzoomfly, frozencpu.com. That'll make me feel better.

EDIT: on topic, I got some rounded cables at newegg and they work great. They were "genereic" so I would say, all cables are created equal

I've used hundreds of cables, but only recently started using rounded cables. So far, I haven't noticed anything unusual, although a Maxtor hard drive developed some file corruptions fairly recently. I'm not sure if that was because it's Maxtor or because of the hard drive or other complicated interaction which is unpredictable

side note: 99% of problems that people hate with Windows are caused by unpredictable interactions that are impossible to predict due to the number of manufacturers that make the hardware/software. It's more interesting when you consider a manufacturer like Apple, who manufacturers or controls the specs of all the hardware and how it will interact with OSX, and then count how many problems they have versus the number of possible configurations.
