ide cable length

I need to get a new ide cable for my optical drives, and they're quite a ways away from my motherboard headers. I was wondering, when they list the size of the dual device cables, are they listing the length to the first plug, or the length of the whole cable?
 
the length of the cable.
For an 18 inch IDE cable, you get 12 inches between system and slave and 6 inches from slave to master.
 
I have some nice 36" ide cables that work great.. I like them because I can just pop it out of my case to someone els'es hd and suck data down

Yeah, they work, but they are way out of spec and can cause some nasty corruption of data.
 
I keep my IDE cables at 12" for main drive and 16" for slave best reliability. I tried some 18" and 24"ers before and corruption was rampant. :)
