I'm using my computer when suddenly it freezes. I press CTRL+ALT+DEL and it reboots. At the startup it says that my IDE1 and 2 are empty when there should be 2 harddrives present. I'm using a recently RMAed (2nd in a row) Abit IS7 with a WD120GB8MB and a Maxtor 120GB2MB, both PATA.
I open up my computer, take the IDE cable off (a cheap rounded one from SVC.com), plug it back in. Nothing. I take an old rounded IDE cable (from SVC.com as well) that's a single instead of a double and just plug that into my WD. Nothing. I take the IDE cable (same as the one on the HDs) that's plugged into my 2 optical drives and plug it into the HDs. It works. I take the original IDE cable and plug them back in the way they were originally. It works again.
Now, should I expect some serious system failure in the near future? Could it have been the IDE Cable's fault? the HD's fault? The Motherboard's fault? 'm probably going to run the HD Diag tools tonight.
<rant>Speaking of this motherboard, it's the 2nd RMA from Abit I got since the first RMA they sent was giving me random freezes. The northbridge heatsink clip on the original motherboard I had broke off and they made me pay $25 + shipping to get a replacement even though I'm still under warranty. But now the fan on the northbridge is making noises and seems to be dying. GOD! I'm never buying Abit again.</rant>
