So I have a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R. It has an ICH10R raid controller.

On this controller I have a X-25M and 4x Samsung 750GB in RAID10.

I have my OS and commonly used programs on the SSD and most other programs on the RAID 10 array.

I have a huge problem where programs (for instance Adobe Acrobat Pro) hang for several seconds when I try to do something in them. I thought that perhaps the ICH10R could not handle all the drives I had on it. However I think I may have found the issue.

I can hear whenever my programs hang I can hear a drive(s) spinning up. A few seconds later the program will come back. Other times I can hear the drive spin down, when I try to access files on it they will hang for some time then I can hear the drives spin up.

I have adjusted Windows power manage to never spin down HD's, however I continue to hear them spin down.

Is there somewhere else that handles the spin down/up on the ICH10R raid controller?

The drives may have APM or Advanced Power Management set, you would need a utility that can set or unset APM; you would probably need to connect the drives to a non-RAID controller for that. After putting it back, it should not break the array.

Actually, the RAID array spins down because the HDD spin down in the Windows settings is set to 20 minutes by default even with the power management is set to Performance. You need to change the advanced power options while in the Performance profile, and change the HDD spin down setting in the "Plugged in" section from the default 20 minutes to "Never."

In other words, the ICH10R is not to blame. The default Windows 7 HDD spin-down setting is.

One of the first things I did is what you have described in Windows Power Manager with the same result.

Okay, then, which Samsung hard drives were you using in that RAID 10? You see, there are versions of the Samsung drives that always spin down regardless of the Windows power management settings, and that the spin-down mode is permanently enabled in the drives' firmware (and cannot be disabled at all). Your 750s might have been of that series of drives.

Maybe a litte late, but I had a similar problem - only my drives kept spinning down after standby of the whole system. I could fix it so far by using the 9.6 drivers and setting the registry parameter LPMDSTATE for all ports in the registry to 0 like described here: http://derek858.blogspot.com/2009/01/windows-7-intel-sataahci-lockups.html

As far as I can tell now, the RST 10 drivers don't support this parameter any longer (at least it's not working for me).
