Hey,

The other day I bought an Iceberq 4 VGA cooler for my Sapphire Radeon 9600, reasured by the package that it would fit. I come home, and it doesnt clear it at all. It wont lay flat at all. So what are my options? It says on the damn package it will fit the card...is there anyway I could make it fit?

Just make sure you do the dremeling on the cooler, not the card ;)
 
Seriously, if you want to dremel it to fit you can spread a thin layer of modeling clay on the cooler then position it like you'd mount it, remove the cooler very carefully then look at the impressions in the clay. Where you see impressions that are deeper in the clay than the GPU core srape the clay away from those spots and mark them with a sharpie. After the ink is good and dry peel the clay off and start grinding in the spots you marked. If you've made sure the cooler was properly lined up you should eventually chew enough of the material away so that it fits.

You might consider dismounting the fan first before grinding on the cooler because the cooler can get hot enough to melt the fan base as well as give you a nasty burn.

When you're ready to mount it after modding it take a little time to make sure that whatever you made room for isn't touching the cooler anywhere, it could cause a short and fry your card.
 
madmat - thanks for the detailed description, it sorta worked out that way.

I covered the bottom of the cooler with painters tape, and marked what areas needed to be cut. I took my time with the dremel, and now its a nice snug fit. Of course i cleaned it with some rubbing alcohol, and all that jazz. But i had to cut off one of the screw holes for the blue cover :( Ah well, overclocking time.

I had an Iceburq 4 on my Sapphire Radeon 9600XT and it fit perfectly fine with no modifications...
 
Glad to hear it worked, I came up with the clay idea after modding a Crystal Orb to fit on a GF2 GTS I used to have. I did it by eyeballing it and ended up grinding more than I needed off so I sat back, said "Hmmmm...there has to be a better way..." and remembered a tip for determining if you need to notch pistons in an engine after putting an insanely big cam in it.
