i know there are already posts on this, but the links are all broke because they are 1-2 years old. i bought this motherboard in '04 and its been fine until a few months ago. the NB fan started making a horrible noise during start up, but went away after the computer had been on for a while so it never really bothered me too much.

anyways, it finally died today so im going to try to oil it up and see if that works for a temp fix. what would be some cheap solutions for this problem? i dont want to spend a lot because im planning a new C2D system for when the price drops hit. would the easiest way of solving this be to just ghetto mount a small fan onto the heatsink or should i buy a whole new heatsink. opinions and links appreciated.
 
yeah you can install a fan, but for the same price you can prolly get a full blown NB HSF
 
My MAX3 board functioned for a long time without the NB fan.. and i had an P4 2.6C overclocked to 3.6 - If you are planning on upgrading soon, maybe just save the hassle and run it without?
 
if its just temporary (prices drop in april right?) take any fan of any size you got laying around and just set it near the heatsink, as long as some air is blowing across it it should work good enough. you dont have to specificly mount it to anything unless you plan on moving the case.
 
Mine died a long time ago, it runs just as well without it as long as it gets airflow from the main HS.

well, i do have a side fan that semi blows over the heatsink. that may be good enough.

i dusted and oiled the fan and put it back in and it seems to be working again. (i know this won't last though) is there a way to see the NB temp? i looked in the BIOS, but all i saw was the NB fan speed and it was going at ~4300. i would like to know the temps im running at now though and compare them with when the fan dies again to see what my fanless temps are to see if this will be a viable solution for me.
 
No way to get northbridge temps on the max 3 through the motherboard. You will need to use some external means.
 
Man! I remember these boards. I wanted one so bad, good thing I held out for so long hehe. But they are still awsome boards.

The funny part about them is they are still so popular they sell for more than we paid for them back in the day.
 
dang, well that kinda sucks.

haha yea, i was looking on ebay the other week and i was surprised that the board was still so expensive. i got mine for 175 in 04 from newegg and on ebay some are up to 160 on bids. :eek:
