IC-7G & 3.0c overclockers, please help

I just recently bought some Corsair XMS3200 ram to replace my old Crucial pc3200 ram, hoping to get a higher oc than 3.3g @ 220fsb. Well now with the new ram I can't get anything stable over 220fsb and even the stability of 220fsb is questionable. So, I went and got some Corsair XMS4000 thinking that the 250fsb potential of this ram would help. I get basically the same results, very unstable over 220fsb. After messing with voltages of both the cpu and vdimm, relaxing the timings of the ram and changing the ratio to 5:4, I still can't figure out how to get it stable.

I've seen where people have oc'd their 3.0c to 3.6 on air cooling without too much problem. But I'm guessing that it's my cpu holding me back at this point since the XMS4000 should have no problems running at 250fsb. Is this a correct assumption?

At this point I'm hoping that someone with a similar setup to mine will login and give me the magical setup for timings and voltages to get my rig up in the 3.5g range. That's not asking too much is it? ;)

Anyway, I join Sideroxylon request as to posting some more information from the gurus who successfully overclocked 3.0c at similar or close to it setup. Please share your experience. What memory (brand) and what DDR speeds would you recommend to acquire?
 
Its luck of the draw, you can try various things just to test for stability... like reducing to 3:2 ram ratio just to make sure your ram isnt holding you back. Look where the 3:2 ratio got me. Dont be scared of it.

No fair!!! 2.4c's are notoriously high OC'ers. Although that is a nice OC. :)

On the other hand my 3.0c is not known for its oc'ing abilities. :( I thought for sure I would be able to get this up to 3.5-3.6g range but I guess not. I think I've tried just about everything I can think of, 3 different types of ram, things I've read and nothing is stable over 220fsb. CRAP!! I guess I shouldn't be too upset. My system runs my games and benchmarks just fine. I just wanna squeeze every last drop out of it. I'm sure you guys understand. :p

Now I have another problem. I now have 2 sticks of XMS3200XL and 2 of XMS4000pro. I can return either pair. They both benchmark very similarly and cost about the same. Which should I keep? I'm leaning towards the pc4000 myself since it has the pretty lights that I wont be able to see once my side cover is on. :D

Juzzie, good luck with your OC'ing. It was nice to have company to share my misery but I think I'm about done. Let me know if you find the magic combination.
 
I have the exact same setup as you, with Corsair PC4000pro. Have you locked your PCI/AGP bus? I can get to 3.6 no problem, but keep it at 3.5 @ stock voltage to keep things nice and cool. Without locking, I can only achieve 3.3ghz at best.

Yeah it's locked. Just outta curiosity is yours locked at 66/33?
 
If you cant get past ~220fsb, I'd say keep the XMS3200XL. The lights on the PC4000 may look cool, but the enhanced performance of the XL is much better ;)
 
If you have pc4000....doesnt that mean the ram is rated to at least that and then the limiting factor is then transfered to either your cpu mobo or something else? I have kingston value ram on a 2.8c and im sitting at 220 fsb pretty much all day everyday wihtout a problem. That is at 1:1 ratio as well.
 
also one note, what are your GAT settings. (memory- Game Accelerator Timings)

Just making sure you dont have like F1 or something on.... that will keep you from hitting high FSB's too. I have everything on Auto. But most people have to turn some to disable for them to reach high FSB's.

THough I'm thinking its probably just your CPU, also.
 
dude i'm in the same boat. i can't get past 3.3 either. i'm stuck at around 220fsb also. i've tried 1:1 ratio, 5:40 ratio, my ram is running stable at 2-6-3-3... it won't boot into windows past that. i'm on IC7-G with corsair 3200 twinx too.
 
My 3.0c just didn't have any headroom to get past 3.3g. My 3.0e on the other hand, I almost got to run at 3.9g. I got it to run Aquamark but not 3dmark05. I've got it running at 3.6 right now because it was getting so freakin' hot. But it was running stable at 3.75g. People aren't kidding when they say the Prescott's run hot. I'm gonna buy a Koolance Exos and that should help with the temps.

Anyways from my experiences and from what I've read the 3.0c just isn't a very good overclocker.
 
There are 2 different versions of the 3.0C chip:

1 has 30 caps the other has like 12. If you look at the underside of the CPU and you see the same thing in a 6x5 grid - you have a 30 cap chip. rumor has it that the extra caps allow the chip to run with a much more stable voltage and thus are easier overclockers.

Luck of the draw really. If you monitor the FS/FT threads you will see people advertise that they are selling 30 cap chips.

Good luck (mine is one of the crap versions and I have mine overclocked to 3.4 right now. I just installed my H2O kit over the weekend and am still pushing my video card at present (445 / 1.19 out of a GT on a DD NV68 - no bios mod). I can let you know what I get my proc up to, if you are interested.
