Hey guys,
I got a buddy who needs a new computer, but he doesn't want to build it himself, he wants prebuilt. I told him Ibuypower. Good store? Please share anything you have, I need to feel like I made the right decision. :)

compare thunderbox to alienware/voodoo pc. That's what "class" of system they sell. Top notch everything, and for a lower price than alienware/voodoo.

I didn't know there was a price cap involved. List what you're willing to spend. Also, checkout thunderbox's EliteGS system for the value concious.

Consider the Alienware ALX = Thunderbox XFuel

i ordered a pc from ibuypower about 18 mo ago, and it was the biggest nightmare ever! i ordered through their web site, and placed an order for a top-of-the-line (at the time) gaming system. this was a $3500 system with pretty much the best and fastest of everything.

the order process was fine, and after a couple weeks i received my system. when i opened the box, i was sceptical. i looked through the acrylic case and saw what looked like a rat's nest. the cable management was HORRIBLE. it really did look like a monkey had assewmbled the system. wire everywhere! so, i rewired everything, and then powered it up. it took about 15 minutes to POST and then display a Windows login screen. something was definitely wrong. i triplechecked all connections, inspected parts, etc, but could not figure out exactly what was wrong. i suspected bad mobo, and/or ram, and/or HD.

so, i called their support line, and spent a couple hours troubleshooting. they finally decided that i needed to replace the mobo, memory, and proc. so, they gave me an RMA and said they would send out replacement parts after they received the bad parts and inspected them - 2-3 weeks. i told them that that was unacceptable - especially since they had a 30 day return policy. so, they charged my credit card for another $1500 and sent out the replacement parts immediately. i got the parts about a week later, and was SHOCKED. they had assembled the mobo, ram, and proc (including heatsink), and literally squeezed/stuffed it all into a mobo box ... and then stuffed that into a small fedex box. when i examined it, i realized that every time you picked up the box that it would put pressure on the mobo and proc. and this thing had been thrown all over the place and had boxes placed on top of it during shipment. obviously, this crap didn't even post when i wasted time installing it. i had not even wanted to install it at all, but the service tech insisted that i at least try it.

so, i shipped that back and they sent me another mobo, proc, and memory (unassembled this time, and packed better). i think my 3rd mobo was used, or maybe somebody else's RMA. it had lots of bent caps, scratches, etc, and didn't work. so, they shipped me a 4th mobo, and charged my credit card again. at this point, i had almost $7000 in charges on my card, and my CC bill was due. i went round and round trying to get ibuypower to take the charges off my card for parts i had already returned, but they dragged their feet on it. i finally had to contest the charges.

and the 4th mobo didn't work either. (it was a gigabyte mobo, and i'll never buy one of those again).

at this point, it had been over 2 months, and i had what amounted to $7000 of high grade junk. ibuypower wanted me to send the pc back to them for inspection and repair. instead, i told them i wanted a refund. they claimed that i had passed the 30 day return period, and could not return it. we argued about this for a few hours until i finally got a manager on the phone and told him that i was going to contest the charges and, if necessary, hire a lawyer. he gave me an RMA.

so, i contested all of the charges with my credit card company anyway, and sent the pc back to them COD (RMA). it took another 4 weeks for the issues with charges on my credit card to be resolved. so, i wasted over 3 months, and countless hours with a junk pc from ibuypower. in retrospect, i wished i had taken pictures of the rat's nest wiring job they did. it actually looked like somebody had tried to fluff the wires out as much as possible and fill the case with wires. oh, and the case was cracked when i first received it too.

ibuypower sucked. the only good thing about the experience was that they finally agreed to RMA the pos.

i don't like their looks... i have two friends with ibuypower pc's and their wire management is horrible, plus their pc seems slower than mine, and their specs are higher than mine.

Well...all i know is out of 33 pages on resellerratings, 25 are very satisfied.

what is preventing you from doing it yourself? and 25 out of 33 means only 75.75% are satisfied... which means 1 out of 4 computers they ship out people are dissatisfied with.

I don't know about me, but I wouldn't buy a computer with those kinds of odds of it being bad

well now, why don't we have a look at their page at resellerratings ...

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2001.html

looks like the only category in which they rate above a 5 (out of 10) is on price.

7.67 Pricing of Products and Services
4.76 Likelihood of Future Purchases
4.82 Shipping and Packaging
3.45 Customer Service
3.59 Return or Replacement

and the really funny thing is that they tell their customers to go vote for them at resellerratings too. they asked me to go give them good feedback after i placed my order. good thing i held out until the bitter end before posting my review.
