If anyone knows if IBM outsources to some manufacturer for the cases of their workstations, or where to acquire one from them sans the guts, I'd really appreciate it. I want a computer that looks like Darth Vader would feel comfortable using it. :cool:
 
They make their best cases in-house. A model 3090 enclosure would probably fit the bill:

what exactly is a 300mm fishkill server room? I mean, I know Fishkill is a town, and I know what a server room is...I'm stumped on the 300mm part. Is your elevated floor 300mm off the ground or what?

I have a server room at my office, and the elevated floors are only about 6 inches off the ground...about 150mm...
 
Thanks for the links. I was hoping to buy a brand new one. Some of their systems are so cheap you could probably outspend buying a Lian Li case alone so I might do that and gut it and put my own stuff in there ;)

Incidentally, do you know if they have standard ATX motherboard mounts inside and standard ATX PSU's?

here's a basic rundown...
300mm is the diameter of the wafer that the tools etch the microprocessors onto, hence the name.(300mm has more yield per wafer than 200mm wafers=cheaper production costs)
Processors for the Apple G5, Nvidia 6800 gpu's, Sony ps 3, Xbox 2, and the upcoming Cell Processor all come out of the fishkill ibm automated chip fab.

my bad for not explaining it at first. i guess i thought it was common knowledge considering the lineup..
 
Oh. I know about the 300mm wafers. I just usually see the word "wafer" after the 300mm part, indicating that it is a fab plant.

I was imagining a 300mm raised floor, the ones which hide all those red-hot water cooling return pipes which lurk there, waiting to burn careless fingers which stray too close... Still, better than the 1½m raised floors that I can't climb back out of again!
