Okay I just can't sort this out and it's driving me nuts.
Disclaimer: I'm a tech guy, I know my stuff.

Problem: My IBM T40p says it has usb 2.0. All my ports are running at USB 1.1. I can't update the drivers, and have even gotten the motherboard replaced (which took FOUR MONTHS *** *******!!!) and it still isn't running at USB 2.0.

What can I do? Did I miss something?

If you go into the device manager does the enhanced USB host controller show up? I've had lots of issues with USB 2.0 controllers not being installed properly the first time around, and I just had to kinda "nudge" windows by telling it to update the drivers on it's own to make them work.

This is a known T4x series issue. The Intel Chipset drivers for USB2.0 support on some Types don't seem to work correctly. You're not alone in this problem.

A workaround I came up with with some googling back when I was experiencing this issue:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-46058 (Download the oss206ww.exe)

Run the EXE to extract INFINST_AUTOL.EXE. Then create a folder called C:\intel.

Invoke a command prompt and navigate to the folder containing this file then run:

ThinkPad T40 - Infinst_autol.exe -p c:\intel

This should extract the file you'll need. I'm not sure of the syntax but it should be in either the Win2000 or XP folders and called USB2xxxx.inf.

Run devmgmt.msc or compmgmt.msc from the run dialogue box and then navigate to Device Manager, select the USB2.0 Root Hub, dependent on your system chipset, then force install the USB2XXXX.inf file.

Reboot.

It hasn't worked all the time but it worked enough...ymmv. Some work flawlessly with USB2.0, some don't. Some of the problematic ones have no issues with flash drives, but hook up a DVD-RW or an external HDD, and poof, issues.

Hope this works, good luck.
