Ever wondered how to install Linux on your PS3? If you answered “yes”, I recommend heading over to IBM and reading the detailed how-to posted by Jonathan Bartlett. Thanks to Jerry M. for the linkage.

It is unusual for gaming consoles to allow foreign operating systems to be installed on them. Since consoles are usually sold at a loss, they are usually locked down to prevent games from running on them without the publisher paying royalties to the console developer. Sony decided to open up the PS3 console a little bit, and allow third-party operating systems to be installed, with the caveat that they do not get accelerated graphics.

Actually... I didn't know this. I heard people talk about linux on the ps3 as a huge advantage. But this really changes things.

Look at all the awsome things you can do with the xbox original. I mean... you will truly be limited here unless you at least have 2d acceleration. You probably can't even play a movie under linux or try setting up a mame console without 2d acceleration.

It seems large companies like Microsoft, Sony, Apple, ect... are more then capable of designing great hardware, but they allow their lawyers to get in the way and ruin it.

As usual, it is going to take an "illegal" *cough cough* hack to get these devices working the way they were meant to in the first place.

You're mistaking what you want for what you think they were meant to be.
They were Meant to be the way they are, you just want them to be something different (e.g. more).
