HI

my "friend" has "found" a ibm thinkpad T41 laptop in the box with everything included.
problem: when we start it up he instantly ask for a password. there is no way to get in the bios or something like that. he says press F12 to enter it, but that wont work, i need that password first. anyone a clue what to do, or where to find some help? (dont even suggest to go to IBM :) )

thx let me know if you can help

You'd have to open up the case to reset the CMOS on the motherboard. Wow, your friend sure must be "lucky" to "find" this computer just laying around... ;)

Your 'friend' has 'found' himself a nice paperweight! IBM's (as well as other good laptop manufacturers) store their passwords in several places and so reseting the CMOS wont do anything. The harddrive, memory and processor may be salvagable. But without the password that laptop isnt doing anything other than looking good.

I suppose that somebody with a bit of spare time and some good tools could go and reprogram all the onboard storage on the board to their stock states... but that would require a lot of skill, a lot of EECS equipment, and a spare unlocked laptop. In other words, somebody that would be getting paid good money for something a little less shady.
