The City of New York and IBM are teaming up to create a computer-science focused school which spans from grades 9-14. Students will leave with an associate’s degree, and a guarantee they will be first in line for jobs at IBM.

"The idea is to create a new [educational] model for science, technology, engineering, and math--areas where companies are aggressively hiring. If you look at hiring requirements, you won't see a huge amount of difference in a lot of entry-level IT jobs." So students will, theoretically, have the skills to work any entry-level IT position.

14? IOW the IBM crap sucks so bad it takes you 50% longer to complete your tasks? Having suffered with some of their irRational software at work I think graduating at grade 16 is more realistic.
 
Like an AS will ever be picked over BS with coop and interning experience on the front lines. :rolleyes:
 
That seems a bit early to be indoctrinating people into a career choice.

Not to mention, business-run schools usually provide a cheapened education.

I don't see anything in there about charging a lot more to go there, so I think somebody would be better off with that than JUST a high school diploma and then if they want they can spend the money to learn even more somewhere else - sounds good to me.

Well, trade schools aren't anything new. The allure is that "Oh look, grades 9-14!" which sounds great but it's not like they're learning extra, the best case scenario is that they tailor entire curricula towards CS and IT. However, this seems no different than going to community college.

Problem is the article says IT, but they also say CS. Different! Different!

Second problem is says the city of New York is teaming up. Whoa. Where did NYC get all this extra money? Oh wait, they're bringing this entire state down, fiscally. I say we cut off the entire county from the state.

But yeah, it sounds appealing from a student perspective. My school had nothing for engineering or computer science. We had no wood or metal shop because one of my friend's older brothers cut his thumb off during shop. The computer oriented electives were a joke. However, they did have strong stuff for broadcasting, hosting a local TV station.

I would have liked something like that, but c'est la vie.
 
I dunno, on one hand I kind of am apprehensive that there will be this high school who's sole job is to crank out workers for a particular job field.... but then again many high school sports teams are just the same.
 
uh grades 9-14 guys 9-12 is hs 13 and 14 is for your associates degree.
