ibm. "162 configuration change has occured'"

ok.. so i am supposed to install office on a computer... it is an IBM 300pl.. anyways...

every time it starts...i get this bios message... "162 configuration change has occurred" and i get a bsod before i can get into win2k..

any ideas?

should i try to repair install win2k? the less time i spend on this thing the better...

ok.. i go to repair installation.. and it says it can't find the installation... what is that crap?

the win2000 splash screen shows up.. and all that and it BSOD's... so that means it is reading the hard drive, right?


what is a windows2000 repair disk, and how do you make one?

should i just reload windows??

if i go to recovery console.. which i have no idea what it does.. and type chkdsk, it says "the volume appears to have one or more unrecoverable problems.

edit again.. the HD makes a wied whining sound when i do a c:\dir , and it "an error occured during dicrectory enumeration."

the hard drive is fucked i guess..

and the front case fan is dead, well.. it actually spins for 20 seconds or so.. then decides to stop.. like the motherboard is telling it or something, not liek it is dead.... so the cpu gets up to egg cooking heat...

pII 350 or some shit...

The front fan could need to be oiled, or perhaps is plugged into a wrong power source (most possibly the CPU fan plug. ALso, the HD is fucked, I would test out a new one, or if your feeling brave, do a reformat and fresh install on the current one.

does the chip have fans on it as well? The chip should not be astronomicaly hot like that, unless there's no cooling on it, which would be ultra stopid...

of course there are no fans on the cpu heatsink... this is a prebuilt were are talking about... and the fan can't be plugged in wrong.. it is hard wired to the psu i think...

i can dig up a 4 gig hd... not quite the 6 gig that was in there, but it will do...

the computer only has 1 ide channel too.. and i have no idea how to get the mother or daugther boards out..

Here is the action tree for the 162 mismatch code. Basically, the device information is different from what the BIOS is expecting. Could be a bad piece of hardware, or a bad CMOS battery.

Those systems have a bunch of riser/daughter cards. Make sure all of them are snug.

Try running a chkdsk /r command from recovery console. Try making some diags using any software for the purpose. IBM have their own util for that. That sounds to me like a corrupted fat. Happens too often on win2k w/o SP's . try google for UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

I actually happen to have an IBM 300PL sitting right next to me. I installed Win2k on it a couple of days ago.

I also had the issue with the front fan stopping after a couple of seconds. I then cut the wires to the mainboard (front I/O-header thingy), and plugged the fan into the fan header on the backplane. The fan still stopped turning after a while. I then bypassed the mainboard completely, using a FDD connector from the PSU instead. Now it did work just fine.

Anyway, one stupid thing is that after every single change you make to the system (replacing hardware, enabling/disabling something), you have to access the configuration menu and save the changes. I had to do this after adding some RAM, and again after replacing the standard SCSI HDD with an IDE one.

So Win2k does work fine on these systems, just try another HDD and see whether that changes anything.

so, should i cut the fan wires and run them directly to a molex??

i probably am going to stick a 4 gig hd in there... i got a few lying around... i am going to try reformatting the hd first actually... but the fan is bothering me...

there are only 2 molex connectors.. and 1 floppy... all are being used... is there a bios setting like "quiet fan" that might be on? the hdd is formating... so it looks like i should be set... i just want to figure this fan shit out
