i got a custom built computer for xmas, and i have a dual core 4 thread i5 at 3.2 ghz. it just isnt powerful enough. games like civilization 5 start to get slow after a while, it gets laggy when the map is huge. i was looking at an i7 950. any thoughts? cant be too expensive as i cant get a job yet.

If you have a dual core Intel® Core™ i5 processor it is going to be an Intel Core i5-6XX with intergraded graphics. These processors are using socket 1156 and can’t use an Intel Core i7-9XX (socket 1366) or the 2nd generation Intel Core processors which use a socket 1155. So for upgrading the processor you are looking at the Intel Core i5-750 or i5-760 and the Intel Core i7-860, i7-870 or i7-875K. It is important to note that each of these processors do not have any IGP (Intergraded Graphics Processor) so if you are using the processors graphics on your old system you are going to have to add a video card.

thanks for pointing out what i already did.

Your cpu might not be the issue. What parts make up the rest of your system, specifically your graphics card? If you don't know, does it maybe have a model # that we could look up?

I need an upgrade too. My computer experiences the same thing and I'm thinking about upgrading to i7. Not only I am playing online games, I am also running a lot of programs. The only problem is upgrading is expensive. I am checking if I can get something online for less. Can anyone tell me if i7 is worth your money?

i have an xfx radeon 5750 on one monitor. its not the problem trust me. my motherboard says it is i7 compatable. its a gigabyte h55m. pretty nice motherboard, it has usb 3 and actually really nice sound quality for the integrated audio.

i was looking at those, but there so dam expensive

depends on which one, there have been plenty of deals recently for $80-$100.

You don't need a hug capacity SSD, just one large for your OS and programs. All your data, music, movies, etc goes on to a regular HDD for storage.

i7 860 or i7 870. the i7 9xx are socket 1366.

Correction: i7-860 or i7-870. There is no i7-850 at all.

And to the OP: The i7-950 that you're considering would require a new X58 chipset-based motherboard since as tricky0502 noted it is an LGA 1366 CPU while your current board is only an LGA 1156 socket. The two sockets are neither physically nor electrically compatible with one another.

The thing is "i7" is mostly a marketing term. It has been applied to processors from TWO core generations on THREE different desktop sockets (plus god knows how many mobile sockets).

While there is a CPU currently available that will go in your board and that is marketed under the i7 brand (the i7-870) it is slower in almost every test than the sandy bridge i5-2500. Given that an i7-870 costs more than an i5-2500 AND a cheap motherboard I don't see much point in getting it unless you plan on overclocking (with sandy bridge overclocking increases both your CPU and motherboard costs).

My advice would be to go with one of the i5 quads that is compatible with your board, it should deliver a significant speedup in games that can use all four cores (afaict most modern ones can) and at a much more reasonable cost than the chip marketed under the i7 brand.
