i7/TRUE orientation?

I just reseated my i7 and TRUE, as I felt my temps were a bit too high. It was idling around 45c at 3.6ghz 1.175v.

I decided to clean off the old thermal paste that came with the TRUE using moist glasses cleaners (contained isopropanol). I also cleaned some dust from the heatsink itself. After this I put on some Arctic Silver Matrix. I put on a glob a bit larger than pea size and left it like that.

I then added a Scythe fan I bought to make it push pull.

Lastly, I changed the orientation in an Antec 902 to point towards the rear exhaust.

After all this, the temps only changed to idle around 42c. This is pretty disappointing, as even the load temps on Prime95 seemed to have lowered around only 5c.

Does this sound right? I'm thinking of trying pointing it to the top fan, as well as cleaning off the thermal paste with actual isopropanol. This along with buying some tested and trusted thermal paste like AS5/MX-2/3? I also plan on trying a difference method of applying paste, such as the credit card or line method. I know that this AS Matrix has a long cure in time, but would it really make a big difference?

I was considering that after I saw the results from a bit of searching. I think I may try it next time if I end up reseating it again. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm perhaps actually doing anything wrong. I always thought the temps should be better.
 
check base of TRUE with razor to see if its flat and might look into doing 'washer' method if using old bracket mount.
