Hey,

I have an EVGA 132BL-E758-A1 mobo with an I7 2.66.

My friend is running the same mobo and proc and he helped me OC it to 3.6Ghz (I have an aftermarket Zalman cooler, big mofo). The only problem is apparently the multiplyer is locked down on this proc so I can't get the most out of my RAM. So by bumping up what he did, he said it's pretty much a trade-off on RAM or CPU Freq. So right now it's running the RAM at 1356Mhz, but it's 1600Mhz RAM. He can adjust it to 4.0Ghz @ 1600Mhz RAM, but that's too high for this cooler, even though it's huge. So the other option is apparently 3.4Ghz @ 1600Mhz on the RAM.

I'm thinking the RAM is going to be more of a bottleneck than the processor clock, but I'm not sure. He hasn't messed with the 3.4 @ 1600Mhz setting so he's not entirely sure if it'll be stable like that. I was wondering if anybody else can tell me their settings for a similar setup, since all the parts are pretty common, especially for OC'ing.

So which should I have?
3.6Ghz w/ 1356MHz RAM
or
3.4Ghz w/ 1600Mhz RAM

I wouldn't have to OC my RAM to run it at 1600, it's 1600Mhz RAM.

Thanks for your time and replies

you are better off with 3.4ghz and the ram at 1600mhz.. since the majority of the i7's performance is QPI and memory based.. but it really depends on what you are using the system for.. if its just gaming and web browsing.. the ram at 1356 or 1600 wont make a difference and nor will the cpu speed unless you are running triple or quad SLI..

I'm a student at RIT, so I guess you can put together my uses from that.

It's going to be a daily used computer with a wide variety of things from simple word processing & browsing to gaming (and a lot of programming somewhere in there).

I'm not running a lot of simultaneous processes so I don't think the core bottling up should be a problem, especially with a clock of 3.4 or 3.6, it should be fine, and my friend is running 1333 RAM and has no issue with it, but for some reason, the fact that i have a 1600Mhz RAM BUS and that I bought 1600Mhz RAM is eating away at me like nothing else. I'm pretty sure the tightest bottleneck on the whole NB area will be the RAM BUS, no? So I'm thinking it'd be better to go with the 3.4/1600.

I'm not sure though, so all input is greatly appreciated, especially input about settings.

Here's a good article from Tom's Hardware on the subject

I actually gotta put my OC'ing on hold for now, the computer's blowing up like crazy.

First the video card was shutting off (swapped it for a dupe I had, same problem), then swapped everything short of the CPU and now it's BSOD'ing on Windows load. I'm pretty sure this mobo is shot. So I guess I'll be back to look here when I get a new board.
