I have been reading about i7 with anticipation of building hopefuly in a few months but I am confused about the way memory bus speed works out. So if you want to run memory at 1600mhz the processor bus also has to run at 1600mhz? And that kind of cpu is only an extreme edition processor? And that the motherboard bios of lets say an Asus p6t or R2E will not allow you to unlink the bus speeds like a C2D system?

The second thing is about memory voltages. You want tightest timings for under 1.85 volts as anything above can damage the cpu? 1.65 volts is the holy grail of i7 memory voltages?

Thanks.

1.65v is the intel limit, not 1.85. Anand is saying that the uncore voltage can make up for some vDIMM voltage, which seems strange but acceptable.

And no, they are not locked that way. Besides, the base clock is 133Mhz, you think you are gonna get up to 1600Mhz from that?

Guess I still have some reading to do here. Still confused. Though I thought that the memory bus has its own multiplier which gives you the 1067 - 1600 mhz bus speeds?

Still confused. Will read more tonight thanks,

Dave.

It does have a multiplyer, which is why you dont have a 1600Mhz base clock.
Read the anandtech article on nehalem, and the [H] series on the same.
