so, for some reason, using coretemp, my 920 I7 at all stock settings, won't idle below 40degrees no matter what.

Here is my setup

MSI X58 Pro motherboard
6GB gskill ddr3 1333mhz
core i7 920
Noctua nh-u12p
Lian Li PC7 case


under load with prime95 it stays around 70degrees or so.


40 at idle seems pretty high compared to what others are getting.
even with hyperthreading turned off it still doesn't make a difference.

any ideas?
 
My core i7 ideles @ 45-48 degrees. Thats with 1.31v and at 3.5ghz with noctua push/pull coolermaster ATCS 840 case. I cant get belove that either tho the temp in the room is 25-27 so maby that adds a few degrees aswell.

I wouldent worry much about it, my cpu never hit anything higher than 77 degrees on any core with IBT, Prime or LinX.
 
From the few threads I've read about people complaining about high idle temps, 40-45 seems to be normal for these chips. You have:

1) verified that you have good contact from your ihs to hs?
2) minimized your vcore as described in my oc'ing guide?

Your temps seem fine.

My i7 920 is overclocked to 4.0 GHz at 1.344v under a TRUE-120. Idle temps depend heavily on the ambient temp, but I usually idle around 38-43*C and see temps of 75-77*C at 100% CPU load.
 
I'm idling around 40-43 @ 3.6ghz 1.3v and load around low to mid 70s

I idled 37-40 at stock speeds so ya

I have exactly the same OC and temps but with the Mugen 2.

i've got it running at 3.6ghz at 1.3 right now myself and its idling at 42 with prime maxing at low 70's


so i have no clue why it idles so high at stock temps, i know my cooler has good contact with the cpu
 
probably your ambient temps higher then everyone elses.. theres so many variables that can cause a 2-3C increase in idle temps.. not really anything to worry about..

As sirmonkey1985 mentioned, ambient temperatures have lots to do with it. When my room gets hotter, my temps go up to about 41-45*C ambient. As I'm writing this, it's early morning and rather cool. Ambient temps are 36-39*C.
